3rd Trimester

Is this even possible?

Saw my OB today- she told me I should only gain an additional 3-4 lbs for the rest of my pregnancy.  I started at 180 and am up to 197.  Height is 5'6 1/2 in.  I am almost 30 weeks along.  Should I be stressed about this?  I really do eat well, considering...and I walk at least 3x/week for 30 minutes and do prenatal yoga every Tuesday night.  I also have a pretty active job- ER nurse and I'm still working full-time. I've never been "skinny", always a pretty curvy chick.  Is there anything I can do to keep my weight stable for the rest of the pregnancy???

  • You've only gained 17 lbs?  Amazing.  I've gained like 60.

  • I don't think so... Your baby currently weighs about 2.5lbs. You will be gaining at least 4 lbs (if not 6 or 7) in just baby, not counting your milk coming in, swelling, and other baby stuff.

Considering you have only gained 17 so far, I wouldn't be too worried about it. I am surprised your doctor even mentioned it.

  • I wouldn't worry about it.
Then again, I just don't worry much.

  • Wow, I was told at like 28 weeks that I still had about 20 pounds to gain to have a healthy baby and not risk preterm labor (I was 2 pounds shy of my prepregnancy weight and having weight loss problems with my pregnancy). That just doesn't sound right to me. The fact that your doctor is trying to limit your weight gain to 21 pounds just seems ridiculous.

BTW I technically started overweight and above my normal weight because when I got pregnant I was still carrying about 15 pounds I gained from my gall bladder surgery and recovery.

  • If you want me to tell you to worry... sorry, can't do that! I'm 2 inches shorter than you, and without disclosing too much... I'm definitely heavier. I've only gained 20lbs this pregnancy, but that's only because I gained 65lbs with DD and hadn't lost it all when I got pg again. My doctor has always told me that my weight is fine... with that said, you should be too. Don't stress about it... stress is worse for you and LO than gaining another 5-10lbs.

  • It sounds like you're doing everything right! Eating healthy, exercising... I think anything else you gain is just what your body wants. Nothing else you can really do. Try not to worry about it! You're doing really well.

  • I am 5'6'', almost 29 weeks and have gained 17 pounds as well...started out at 145pounds and my doctor told me I am right on target. so I wouldn't worry at all! We have like 10 pounds to go, not 3 or 4. Just stay active and eat healthy and u should be just fine:)

  • I am also curvy like you. Started the pregnancy at the same weight as you and am the same height as you as well. I had gained about 20 lbs I think by like 30 or so weeks. What I did to help me was actually use a measuring cup to measure out my food proportionately. This really helped me because I thought that I was eating well before I started doing this but once I started measuring out my portions I realized that i was eating really big servings compared to what I actually needed. I would just eat the food because it was on my plate and I didn't want to waste it. Measuring out portions helped me a lot with this and slowed my weight gain down to about 2 lbs a month. HTH
