Perinatologist, any one familiar?

I have an appt with my P guy next week, this is the 1st time I'll see him and honestly besides knowing what the appt will consist of, I'm not sure what else to expect. I mean I think I'll continue seeing him the remander of the pg but can/should I talk to him about things that I'd discuss with my OB?

A friend of mine who is currantly 13wks pg saw her P guy last week and was told not only will she follow up with him but HE will deliver her baby, not the OB. Is that common or does it depend on your situation?

TIA ladies ^_^

  • I don't even know what a perinatologist is! I thought we just dealt with OB's and nurses??

  • Hmm... I only saw my perinatologist once. *shrugs* I think he and my OB tag team based on the situation.?

  • It depends on your situation.  Perinatologists tend to be involved if there is a danger to mama or baby (higher risk).  My nieces were all delivered by perinatologists because 1st pregnancy (twins, one made it) had twin-to-twin transfusion, and second one was way preemie.

  • I don't know what that is either!
  • perinatologist is a fetal specialist who helps with high risk pg
  • I was referred to a perinatologist by my OB after my u/s showed that the baby had a possible issue. So I went to the P for a more detailed u/s (everything looked fine btw). I will see him again at 34 weeks for a follow-up just in case, but other than that I will be seeing my OB regularly like  I normally would......but that's just my case.

  • I saw one when I was pregnant with DD, I continued to see both of them throughout the pregnancy.  My regular OB was the one who delivered and my Perinatologist was just on-call I guess just in case.  The only things I really discussed with the high risk doctor was how DD was doing and what her growth was (I had Intrauterine Growth Restriction with her, so we had ultrasounds constantly to check growth)  All the other pregnancy issues I discussed with my regular OB.  Hope everythings okay with you, can I ask why they're sending you to see a P?

I'm going because I have health issues, I have a heart defect and they are monitoring my health. I think they want to make sure that nothing will pass to the baby.
