Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

s/o vaccines, I found a way to make money!

I got a letter from LO's pedi about a new study they are doing.

For both kiddos, If they get 2 or 3 flu shots (apparently a new kind of flu shot, that is still in the trial stages) a month apart, we get $100/shot and $20 per follow up phone call.

I apparently have to monitor their temps and actions every day and keep a log of everything. New shoes, here I come! and only for the small price of watching my kids possible have adverse reactions!!!

(Im hoping you all can sense my sarcasm. I would never put my newborn or my toddler even through a vaccine "study"!! whether it paid good or not. Im wondering who would agree to do this?

yes! they even called a few days later to see why I havent done it. WTF?! "I dont need the money, thats why"   lol

  • We had vaccine trials near our house and the amount of people lined up with their kids outside made me feel sick.

Why? I wouldn't use a stray dog to test a new shot, let alone my baby!

    Craziness.

  • OK, I'm glad that was sarcasm. I was getting worked up. lol

  • This is why those in poverty often end up in research studies. It's really sad actually. I work in research and our review board won't let us use large amounts money as an incentive for participation in our studies for this very reason. Money or gift cards are only supposed to be reimbursement for your time, but someone who is desperate to feed their children will go to great lengths to get money. Research seems relatively safe compared to other ways of making money. Many people join studies because they just need cash.

  • wow, that is insane!

Ive done something similar before, but it was more of a "if you have the disease, let us draw your blood for a target gift card". Im all for stuff like that, but I really didnt agree with testing vaccines on babies

  • They won't let testing like that go out to the public until it is in the very final stages.  Most likely, they already are 100% certain that there are no dangerous or fatal side effects, and they're looking to see if there are mild ones (like a low grade fever or general fussiness).

Not saying that makes me want to sign up for it, but it's not like parents are taking their kids to labs for tests on the side effects of excessive mercury and lead :)

I guess someone has to be the guinea pig - otherwise it will just be the entire population as the guinea pig. I don't think they should be offering that type of reimbursement though. That seems high to me. However, my SIL does a lot of pharmaceutical testing that is not university based, and they pay her all kinds of money for trying out different drugs. It's not something I would do.

yah Im sure they are at the point where the reaction wont be crazy and cause them to grow a few extra arms and legs. But the idea of putting my children in any type of discomfort for money makes my skin crawl. I totally understand if it was a matter of them being able to eat or not, but still.  God forbid if something did go wrong.

  • Wow.  I thought you were serious at first.  I don't usually flame, but I was about to just go off.....LOL.  So glad you're joking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yep. DH was in the pharmaceutical industry for 12 years (making the flu vaccine much of that time) and BIL has been in it for almost 20 years now. I would discuss something like this with them first to get their insights but I wouldn't completely rule it out. They've both been in a lot of clinical trials and understand exactly what's involved, what the risks would be, etc.

  • I have no issues with adults who want to volunteer themselves for drug studies, but volunteering your kids for something like that just seems....wrong.
