Trying to Get Pregnant

Ladies w/ short LPs.

How many cycles of short LPs did you have before you contacted your doctor?

My LPs are usually 10-12 days and I know that anything under 10 is something to be concerned about (although I did just read that some doctors consider anything less than 12?). But, today is 10DPO for me and I'm spotting bright red blood and cramping pretty bad. I know that AF will show before the day is over. I've done some research, but I can't find how many cycles with short LPs you should have before contacting your doctor. TIA!

Re: Ladies w/ short LPs.

  • I have had two charted cycles in a row with a 7 day LP. I brought it up to my OB/Gyn at my last appt. because my appt. happened to be on 8dpo last cycle that turned into CD1. After talking with her, she said it was okay to start B6 @ 100mg daily & see it that helps. If I have two more cycles of the same 7 day LP then I am to call her. That will be the start of cycle 6 for me if the B6 doesn't help. She said that at that point we will do further testing.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about one 9 day LP. I don't have a number, but if I started feeling like it was a pattern, I would call.

Like I said, I wouldn't worry about just one. And hopefully you won't have to worry about it at all :)

  • I have 9-11 day LPs for the past 4 cycles. When I went to see my OBGYN a couple weeks ago, I just asked him if it was something I should worry about and he said no, not at all. He told me that is still plenty of time for implantation to happen. I know some doctors have differing opinions, but I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I got spotting at 6-7 dpo for 3 months in a row (I was just using OPKs, and not charting), and I called my Dr. but he wasn't much help.  I am going to start charting once AF shows so I have a better idea what going on.  I don't think 10-12 days is really that short, but if it is stressing you out it won't hurt to make a phone call!

I was thinking this, too! I felt bad asking this question since it's just one time, but I just wanted to be prepared.

Thanks for the advice ladies! I'm gonna try not to worry about it until it's something to worry about!

  • I had about 7 charts to show my Dr at my annual appointment.

I think you should have a few charts with a short LP; short being less than 10, so your Dr doesn't blow you off.

  • I just met with an RE for the first time this past Tuesday.  One of the concerns that I mentioned to him is that i've had 10 or 11 day LPs for 5 out of 7 of my last cycles.  I knew that anything under 10 is considered "too short," but I still wanted to ask about it since 10-11 days is just on the cusp.  He said that people are too quick to jump on the "luteal phase defect bandwagon" and that 10-11 days is perfectly fine.  He doesn't see any reason to be concerned about the length in that situation.  If your LP is consistently less than 10 days long (maybe more than 3 cycles in a row), THEN my opinion is that it would be time to bring it up to the doctor.  Just my opinion though!  HTH!

  • Mine has consistently been 10 DPO (well, for 2 cycles trying & I tested and got a bfp on day 10 as well).

After the ectopic, at the follow up I brought this up to my doc & asked a)if it could in some way be related to the interstitial ectopic or b)if it was a problem/should I start B6?

My doc felt a 10 day LP wasn't anything to jump at immediately unless we had further reason to suspect it causing problems; he pointed out that he's had plenty women with such short LPs have healthy, normal pregnancies. He did say that it's *possible* it could be a problem- he just thought it was unlikely.

I say bring it up to your doc. The worst that happens? You pay a copay for the peace of mind to know your doctor doesn't think it's a concern or agrees with whatever you want to do...

PS- sorry about the onset of CD1 :( ::hugs::

  • I think I called after 3 cycles. My decision was partially motivated by the fact that I'm 33, and I'd already been off BC for 6 months. There's no harm in calling anytime, IMO, as long as you understand they may decline to treat you if they feel you're jumping the gun. My doc advised me to start 100mg of B6, which I've been on since cycle 4, I think. They offered me more aggressive treatment options, but I decided to start with B6 and see what happened. My LPs have gotten longer, but no longer than 11 days. And I'm not KU yet. Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Thanks, punky! I was worried about that, too. I want my doctor to take me seriously with things like this.

  • it's not worrisome to have a random short LP then go back to your normal the next month.   My LPs were all 12.   I had 2 random cycles (out of the 20 I charted) where my LP was only 9.    Both times it went back to normal the next month.   My RE said this isn't a concern.

  • My LP was short this last month and I called my Dr and I was told to chart again and make sure it was not a fluke. This was my first month charting so other than knowing the number of days my cycle was I was in the dark. I am lucky to have a doctor now who understands charting and charted herself.
