I planned on charting for a while, because my cycles have always been all over the place. I read taking charge of your fertility, started to chart, and got pregnant during my first cycle.

For freakin' ever, or at least it felt like it. I did 6 mos of temping/charting and the whole deal. Then I switched to just keeping track of CM and menstrual days. Fast forward to post mc#2, I got really annoyed and bought a ClearBlue Easy Fertility Monitor. I got pg on the first cycle...
ETA: Do you mean before TTC or before getting pg? I didn't bother to chart until I was ready to TT/ get pg.
I charted for 6 months and then got our BFP. I thought it was helpful, especially after being on BC pills for 10 years, I knew when I became pregnant right away going by my charts.
I charted for 6 months, got tired of not ovulating normally and we just stopped "trying". I had an idea of when I was ovulating based on CM but we had stopped charting for at least 4 months before I got the +.

I read TCOYF when I came off BCPs in April of '09... kept an eye on CM for a few cycles, kept track of my periods, and did my first official cycle charting w/temps in Oct. '09 (+ OPKs - what can I say, I like to know as much as possible ). I got pregnant that cycle.
Started charting immediately after pulling the goalie. Got BFP on the 5th cycle. Had to sit one cycle out because I had to get an MMR shot for work and you can't get pg for 30 days after that.
I charted well for 2 months, didn't do so well the 3rd and got PG that month. Funny how it works, but I am thinking I am going to chart regularly because when I went of BCP my headaches went away so this may be a permanent thing for me. Inititally I wanted to just chart to learn my cycles for a few months but that kind of went out the door.
I hope you aren't getting discouraged or anything.
I charted for about 16 mo. We were TTC for 19 mo., so the first 3 months we just pulled the goalie and assumed it would happen. After quite the run-around, I found I have PCOS and don't ovulate regularly or often, so charting is my ally. We pursued ART and I continued charting through our BFP as a way of recording and monitoring all our treatment cycle data in one place. I enjoyed both the paid and free versions of www.fertilityfriend.com while I was recording, and I could print out the charts to take to various Dr. appointments. I know my case is the exception and not the rule, but I found charting invaluable! Baby dust!
I went off the pill for medical reasons about 2 years before we were planning on TTC. When I went off the pill my period was all over the place so my doctor encouraged me to chart to see if I was ovulating. After 3 months I was sure that I was ovulating, but I learned that I had a short luteral phase.
Once we started talking about TTC I started charting again. I charted for 3 months before we "pulled the goalie" and I got PG the first cycle.
Re: Charting
like a month
I won't chart next time, but I know when I'm ovulating.
