Belladonna in Hyland's teething tablets?

Do you guys know anything about this? I can't seem to get any reliable info from Google. But the gist I'm getting is that it's a neurotoxin that can cause blindness or even seizures? One site said that the amount of belladonna in the tablets isn't even FDA regulated. I've been giving these to DD pretty regularly and hate to stop as they do help, but of course I will if they are potentially dangerous. She does also wear an amber necklace ... any other suggestions? Last night she woke up screaming every 30 minutes or so from 9-4, when I finally caved and gave her Tylenol. Then she slept until 9 (thank the Lord).

  • there's a small amount in the tablets, but you're right, they're not regulated, and my bigger concern was that my nephew was running around with them and the container wasn't childproof. IMO as long as you're only using a few at a time, it shouldn't be an issue. But the word belladonna makes me nervous in general.

  • This is something that has never really concerned me as I've taken Belladonna for sleep myself.  I have less side effects with it than I do even Benadryl.  I'm pretty sure your LO would have to take a wad of them for their to be an adverse reaction.

  • I had the same thought when I received a bottle as a shower gift.  I'm a pharmacist so I've been doing a bit of research but I don't have any conclusions yet.  There is belladonna in one prescription medication that used to be given to kids for colic (Donnatal) but that isn't used much these days.  So, all that to say, yes it makes me nervous, but I might still use them occasionally if I'm desperate (or find more conclusive evidence that I shouldn't use them).

  • there's other homeopathic teething remedies without belladona.  you can try straight chammomila and also natra bio has a liquid teething remedy.

Is the straight chammomila a liquid dose as well? I think I may have seen those.

    Thank you!

Yea, this is what we use too.  I would never use the tablets.

  • No, they're not dangerous.   Hyland's teething tablets are very low-potency homeopathic remedies.  The amount of belladonna in there is so miniscule that it is ridiculed by people who think homeopathy is bunk - they think it's a placebo because you're basically giving your baby sugar tablets.  I've used homeopathy my whole life, and have taken classes in it.  You can't overdose on such a low potency.  In homeopathy, the remedy belladonna is used for fevers.

That said, homeopathic remedies usually work best if you use just one at a time.  I find straight Chamomilla (also available in sugar-pellet form through Boiron - the displays of little blue tubes you see at health food stores) to be more effective.

Great info. I still have the tablets, but did buy both the chamomilla and the natra bio teething drops today as well. Guess we are set! Praying tonight goes better than last night ...
