Afterschool transportation issue

DS goes to morning Kindergarten and gets picked up at noon by his afterschool program. We hadn't had any problems with pick-up until this week when it was raining. The bus was late picking him up 2 days and he had to wait in the principal's office. The bus driver said she was late because of the rain.

I understand the rain could slow her down. (She picks up at another school before DS's school.) But I think it's not OK that the bus will be late pretty much everytime it rains. Or snows. Or whatever. I think the bus is cutting it too close timewise if rain is going to throw off the schedule enough that DS has to go to the principal's office because no one is there to pick him up.

It doesn't bother me if the bus is late once in awhile. Stuff happens. But everytime there is bad weather is too much, which is what is happening.

My alternative is to put DS in the afterschool program at the school. I like where he is now better overall, but the bus thing is bugging me.

WWYD?

Re: Afterschool transportation issue

  • How late are we talking? 5 minutes or a lot more than that?

Rain can cause traffic delays and if she is only 5 minutes late I wouldn't worry about it and I'd be thankfully she's driving safely in the rain.

  • If she's picking up at another school first she probably has little control over how tight the schedule is (it's not like she can pick the other kid up before school gets out), so I'd just be happy she's driving carefully with kids.

  • There's always going to be more traffic when the weather is bad, that's a given.  She could be leaving in plenty of time and then being held up at the first school, unavoidable traffic, there's always more accidents in bad weather too, which is out of her control.  Your child is waiting indoors with supervision, so that is a plus.  I guess it's just something you will have to deal with if you want to keep him at his current afterschool care.  I rather she take her time getting from location to location then trying to rush and then jeopardizing the safety of the children in her care.
