baby's hands FREEZING in crib at night

Baby sleeps in full footed PJs in a swaddle blanket.  We keep his room (and the house) at 73 at night.  When I go to him for mid-night feeding, his little hands are positively frigid/icy.  Is this ok?  Should I put anti-scratch mittens or socks on his hands to try to warm them, or not worry?

  • I would put mittens if you aren't going to turn the air down.  That seems really low!  His face and ears probably get cold too.

  • Determining an infants body temp. should not be done with their hands or feet due to their poor circulatory systems.  Slide your hand under his clothing and feel his chest/belly.  If he feels cool then he probably is too cool.  73 seems like it would be plenty warm enough to me.  We keep our house set @ 70.  If you find that he is cool under his clothing, you should probably put heavier jammies/more layers on him...just warming his little hands won't do the trick.
  • DS just started waking up like this too.  I put a space heater in his bedroom and it comes on for intervals.  I couldn't get myself to turn on the heat yet, we're still haing 85 degree days, but nighttime it gets near freezing.  He's also in footed fleece pjs.....

  • I would worry about covering hands because my DD sucks on her hands to self soothe and when her hands were covered by her jammies one night, she couldn't get herself back to sleep and got upset and needed me to get her back to sleep.  Her poor jammies were soaking wet where they covered her hands from her sucking on them, but clearly they did not do the trick.

Our DD is a hand sucker too, so they are always cold! But we keep her plenty warm at night.

This is off-topic, and maybe you're using precautions, but space heaters are a huge fire hazard. They should never be left running unattended (like going to bed for the night), and I definitely would not leave one running in a baby's room. Even if it only comes on for intervals and shuts off automatically, it could malfunction and be extremely dangerous.

  • My baby's hand were freezing at night too.  I tried putting mittens on her hands but that was a huge fail!  She needs her hands to hold her pj's and to suck on.  I just ended up putting the heat on at night.  I have it set to 71 degrees.  I turn it off in the morning because it's still pretty warm doing the day.  And I kinda agree with not using the space heater.  I know someone's house that caught fire because they were using a space heater to heat their room at night.  Just sayin.....

  • It is recommended to keep the room baby sleeps in at below 72 degrees to decrease the risk of SIDS. My DS's hands are usually freezing b/c he is also a hand sucker. Ditto the PP who said to check their body temp by feeling their chest or back. LO's generally only need an extra light layer from what you would put on yourself, so I figure my DS is fine in cotton footed sleepers. I have a fairly sweaty kid and couldn't imagine ever needing to run a space heater in his room! And yikes I am cringing just thinking of the fire hazard that would pose!

  • We need to re-think using our space heater! Yikes...

We live in NY and gets pretty cold in our 1930 home. My LO sleeps in her cotton footed pjs with a sleep halo. Then in the winter, we will use thicker fleece pjs with a heavier sleep halo.

Seriously! What do you put your heat/air on?

Our air is at 68 at night and our heat is at 67 at night.

This is what I was thinking!!  I'm sweating just thinking about it!
