Spitting up...how much is too much?

Long time lurker with a question...

My DD is 3 weeks old and had 2 bad episodes where there was a lot of spit up in the past 2 days.  I'm not sure if this would be considered vomiting.  She is smiling and not lethargic and acting her normal self so I'm thinking maybe she ate too much and I moved her too quick after eating.  But I'm also wondering if this is normal.  She is BF.   Any advice for a paranoid first time mom is appreciated!  TIA!

  • Our DS spits up about a handful at every other feeding (we call this the volcano).  He spits up at least a little at each feeding.  The doctor said it's okay as long as he's gaining weight.  My doctor offers free weight checks if we ever want to see how DS is doing.  So you could check with your pedi to see if you can bring her in for a weight check just to make sure she's keeping enough down.

  • You must have read my mind, I was just about to post this same question. But my DS is 7 weeks old and after eating about 45 mins ago has spit up 3 times, but there was A LOT of spit up. It basically went all down his front the first time, all over me the second, and made a puddle on my bed when I laid him down to change his clothes. All I did was burp him and then was holding him upright when he did it the first time. He's also not acting weird or anything, he's smiling and cooing and being his usual self, but I'm worried that if he keeps it up he won't be getting enough to eat. What is wrong with my poor little boy? Sad

I don't think you have anything to worry about.  You can always call your pedi, though.  Keep in mind that he is not only spitting up milk, but it is combining with stomach juices and spit.  So he's not spitting up as much milk as you think.

ETA:  We try not to move DS too much while we are burping him or for at least 15-20 minutes after he finishes eating.  Sometimes even when it looks like we are in the clear, he vomits all over himself and my shoulder.  One time it flew across my lap and got all over our pillows on the couch.

  • My DD spit up a lot in the beginnign. As she got older, it spread out to maybe once a week now for her bad episodes where she spit up A TON, like an entire feeding. One day she did puke bad like that twice and the pedi said I could give her some pedialyte between feedings if I was worried about dehydration, but that it's just something babies do sometimes.

  • My doctor says it's ok as long as he doesn't spit up everything he ate.  If he does, I need to give him some pedialyte for dehydration.

  • My DD does this a lot too.  I have started doing only one breast per feeding and she is definitely spitting up less.  As long as LO still has pee and poo in the diaper then they are getting food which is what I tend to look at.
