Did anyone have an amnio done? We have a soft marker for down syndrome (short femur and humerus) and our blood work came back with an elevated risk (1/110). We are thinking we want the amnio since we are feeling miserable, but we are also very scared of the risk. If anything happened to the baby, we'd never forgive ourselves. That being said, we're also not sleeping, eating or working well over the thought of not knowing if anything is wrong with our little boy : ( Has anyone gone through this?
Thanks.
Re: Poster from 2nd tri: anyone have an amnio?
We decided not to have an amnio and genetic counciling even though the doctors were kind of pushing us to do it. Our baby had a choroid plexus cyst at 20 weeks, and with my blood work they told us the odds of having downs syndrome was 1/80. We were worried but we both agreed that since there was nothing we could do if our little man DID have downs, we didn't want to risk his health. We did have a follow up ultrasound a few weeks later and the cyst was gone.
Sorry if that doesn't help since you want opinions from people who have had the amnio, but I just felt compelled to share. Good luck with everything and I hope your little one is doing just great in there!
I did have an amni after my blood results came back with 1/35 risk of the baby having downs. I felt that the amnio risk was 1/500 of anything going wrong so there were greater odds that the baby would have downs.
Honestly it hurt something awful, but if you have someone who does amnios all the time perform your procedure, I think you will feel better about the procedure.
Everything came back okay and I am so glad that I didn't have to worry for 6 months about my baby's health. And if something was wrong I would have wanted that time to talk to other mom's, join support groups and read as much as possible!
Good luck.
We opted for the amnio b/c I needed to know 100% whether my baby would have a genetic abnormality (never had the blood screening b/c it was just too uncertain for my tastes, YMMV).
I didn't think it was too bad - it was kind of uncomfortable b/c the doctor inserted the needle near my belly button and I am very sensitive there, but it wasn't extremely painful and it was over pretty quickly.
