So this got me thinking about nicknames for LO...

I don't know how or why but from the moment DD was born we have called her "momma". I guess I just started doing it without really even thinking about it and now that is all DH and I call her.

Last night DH and I were talking and he brought up a good point... She is so going to be confused when I want her to start calling me "momma". She's going to be like "But that's my name!" and also, we hardly ever call her "Kylee". I mean, I guess other people call her Kylee so she'll know her name, but we should probably start calling her by her name so she can recognize it eventually!

So this got me thinking... Do you have weird or unusual nicknames for LO and how did you come up with the name? I really have no clue why we ever started calling her "Momma". But now it is going to be so hard to break! Hmm

  • I actually call my daughter momma too! I call my girlfriends that too though. When she was first born she was such a wrinkly little thing, we called her Grandma Wrinkles. As horrible as it sounds its from Real Housewives of New Jersey, one lady had one of those cats with no hair and they called it Grandma Wrinkles lol. We pretty much just call her Quinny now!

  • We have a handful of weird nicknames and half of them we have no idea where they came from or why we started using them. The best one is Grandpa Face, which we often shorten to Grandpa.... We get really strange looks when we use this one in public. It's just that he does this thing where he puffs out his lips and cheeks and totally looks like an old grandpa chillin' on his porch with his dentures out!
  • I give Jonah like 10 new nicknames a day. Some regulars are:

    Stinky Twinkie

    Jonah Bologna

    Stinky Dinx (shortened to dinx)

    Fluffernutter

    the list goes on.

I realized too that I need to just call him Jonah so I've tried to just say his name while speaking to him :).

  • We used to call DS 'booger' until he was able to talk because he ALWAYS had a stuffy nose.  Now we call him Otis because when he was learning to say Lucas it came out sounding like Otis.

DD gets called Kenzie doodle.  Not sure why we added the doodle but it works for her.

  • His name is Dylan Gabriel.

DH calls him Gabe or Gabriel when he's "in trouble" (i.e. knocks his bottle out of his mouth, is eating but wants to look all over the room resulting in his bottle falling out of his mouth)

As for nicknames, the boy has a ton!  Dyl, D', Baby, Mr. Baby, Mr. D', Monkey-Man, Monkey, Monk, Munchin Butt, Munchin, Wiggles, Mr. Wiggles, Squirt (my BIL's nickname for him), Monster, Fussy Butt.  That's all I can think of off the top of my head, lol!

He responds to most of them, including his name name (Dylan).

As to how we cam up with them:  some are obvious, I'm sure but ones like Monkey/Monk, Munchin Butt/Munchin I have no clue.  We just started saying it & it stuck.

  • We call our daughter Pooh.  The "h" is pretty much just there to make it socially acceptable.  Really it's short for Princess Poopy Pants.  The worst was when I had her in her car seat with me while I was peeing in a public bathroom at the airport.  She woke up and was staring at me, so of course I started talking to her. "Hey Pooh,  what are you looking at?  You're so pretty, Pooh!"  Didn't think twice about it until I heard some snickering and got a couple of strange looks walking out of there.  I don't do that anymore.  We should probably start calling her by her name.
  • I keep saying momma too, even though I have a son.  I have to break myself of that habit.  DH calls him "big guy".  I call him "Mr Man" or "boo boo" or whatever other silly name I can come up with.
  • Riley's middle name is Maeve. I call her "maevey" or "maevey baby" alllll the time. She probably has no idea her name is Riley!!

this made me LOL! something I could totally see happening to me, haha

we call LO "bean" no idea how it started, but they way things are going, I think I am going to register her at school with the name bean, haha. it's waht we call her 90% of the time. oh yeah, we also call her "miss Faye" when she is being a crabby patty (her name is Aubrey Faye)

  • He has a bunch, but two in particular: Sir & Toonter/Toonts. The first one is bc well, he's the boss. The second is bc he farts & poops A LOT so it started as "tooter" but then I added the "n". I don't know why (kinda like how Ronnie on Jersey Shore calls Snooki "Schnooki"). Sometimes I combine them too.

    LOL, this cracked me up!!

I call DD a variety of names, but "Poopy" is one that has stuck, especially after a diaper blowout.  DH calls her "Peanut" after she measured on the short side at one pedi appointment.  The nanny calls her a bunch of Chinese nicknames, like "xiao guay guay" (little goody goody) and "xiao kun-yang" (little miss).  Now that she's babbling, I've been making more of an effort to call her Annika, just so she knows that's her real name.  But I must admit, she's still being called "poopy" from time to time.  Embarrassed

I guess we call her peanut sometimes too. DH also calls her "piggy". We were at Target one day and he was walking around the store with her while I was grabbing a few things and I went looking for them. All of the sudden in the next aisle I hear a man singing "Who's the little piggy that drinks mommy's milk? Who's the little piggy who drinks, drinks it up? Who's the little piggy that drinks mommy's milk?"... I'm like okay dude... Do you know how crazy you sound? LOL!

  • When DS was young and got easily mad/frustrated during feedings I started saying he was getting crunk, which evolved into Crunkasaurus (don't ask my why). Since then I still call him Crunkasaurus (I may or may not have created a song as well) and that has led to: Crunks, Crunkie and Sir Crunks-a-lot.

For Halloween I thought about buying a dinosaur costume since he is my little Crunkasaurus, but I decided to wait since most boys like dinosaurs later on.

A hundred hearts would be too few To carry all my love for you.

I was in target w my mom & my sister once & DS was being a little fussy so I told him that he'd eat when we were finished - actually, it went more like "are you hungry? Would you like some 5:30 boobie?". My sister, who was in the next aisle goes,"did you just say 5:30 booby? I heard you all the way over here!"

  • I call her lil' mama, ellebelle, bella, lil' moomoo.

DH calls her Peaches, baby girl & the first 3 ones I call her.

I swear she may never know her name.  We are trying to make more of an effort to use her name lately (at least sometimes) because I was wondering if the lil' mama one would confuse her for the same reason indicated in your OP.

  • I call him Mr. Colin Pants (I have no idea how we started this, but it stuck). Lately he has started lifting up his shirts--we think it's to show off his abs--and DH started calling him the Baby Situation.
  • These are all so funny! And unique!

But I am glad I'm not the only one who calls my DD "momma"! I don't feel so weird now! Big Smile
