NBR: if you have allgeries what do you take?

I've tried Zyrtec and it makes me sleepy---I desperately need something, I can't stand waking up stuffy and then sneezing/blowing my nose for half the morning--it's AWFUL.

If you suffer from allergies, what do you take that works? (that's OTC)

  • I know this isn't what you're asking - you want something OTC. However, I have been getting allergy shots and they work wonders! I'm extremely allergic to cats (within 10 minutes of just being in my mom's house and not even touching her cats, my whole face would puff up and I'd wheeze). Well, after a couple months of shots, I moved into an apartment with 2 cats and I was perfectly fine.  They now live with us, crawl all over me and I don't even sneeze.

Again, I know that's not what you were asking, but I just try to "sell" allergy shots whenever I can ;) GL

  • I never considered allergy shots.........hmmm might be worth looking into though.  I assume I'd have to see an allergist and not just my PCP.....and the quest for an allergist begins........

  • It's not over the counter, but Singulair is the ONLY thing that has ever worked for me.

  • The only one that does me any good without making me sleepy is Walgreen's Wal-phed Sinus and Allergy. It's only a 4 hour pill, though. When my allergies are really bad, I take generic extra strength Benadryl at bedtime. It really knocks me out but helps.

  • I have found Claritin to be about the best.

Yup. A specialist. There is a co-pay for the initial visit where they determine what your allergies are. Then, when you go back for your shots, there are no co-pays for those visits (at least with my insurance). GL!!!

ETA...I did take shots during my pregnancy, btw. So, don't worry about that if you're considering TTC again. :)
