what side of the car to install carseat?

Is there one side that's better than the other? I'd prefer the driver's side since it will be ore convenient based on how our driveway/parking situation is.

  • In the middle seat is the best place to put it.

  • Mine is going in the middle as I heard that is the most safest with my SUV. I would check and see what your owners manual says.

  • We are thinking behind the passenger's side because DH is usually the one driving and he is super tall, so a car seat won't fit behind his seat as he has to put his seat far back to fit in. That is something we are going to ask the car seat installer though when we get it checked out.
  • I thought it was supposed to be in the middle? We put ours in the middle but DH keeps taking my car (I hate when I need to go somewhere because his drivers seat sits so low, I feel like a little kid driving) to work so I haven't had a chance to get it safety checked yet.

  • everyone will tell you middle on here it seems... but the police officer that installed ours said either side. Behind the passengers side has worked well for us because I can hand things to DD easier, and when she was an infant I was able to reach a paci in her mouth -- it's a lot harder with LO behind you... but safety-wise it doesn't make a difference.

  • I think it's ideal to put it in the middle, but if that's not possible, I believe the passenger side is preferable, for safety reasons.

  • In our Baby 101 class, the nurse recommended either the middle seat or the passenger seat.  You want to be able to adjust the driver's seat to where you are most comfortable & the baby's carseat should NEVER touch the seat in front of it.  This can cause strain on the seat & base, thus leading to unnecessary damage to the plastic.

  • The middle of the backseat is the safest place for baby.

Since this is our second though, we'll be putting baby on the passenger side and DS behind the driver.  I find that it's easier to see baby and reach back diagonally rather than directly behind me (when the car is stopped of course).

  • I was told to read our cars owners manual and that will tell us. Ours will be behind the passenger seat.

  • Our carseat is behind the passenger seat, but only because it won't fit anywhere else. If it was behind the driver's seat, it would be too uncomfortable to drive because we have to scoot up.

  • In the baby class I went to they said either middle or behind the driver.

They said, in the event of an accident you are more likely to swerve so YOU don't get hit.  Therefore, behind you would be better than behind the passenger side.

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)
  • ours was installed on the passenger side by the carseat installation people because they didn't want the driver's seat to touch it - even if it was in the middle with our seat back it would have touched (DH & I are both tall).

  • We went today for the car seat check by the police officer. He said usually middle is best but for our car because it has a pullout armrest there, he preferred to put the car seat behind the passenger seat.
  • Ours is on the passenger side because if you put it on the driver side or the middle the car seat touches the seat, and that is when I am driving.  (I am only 5'7" while DH is 6'4").  Plus it seems like it will be easier to see the baby/reach the baby from driver seat to passenger side back seat than straight behind the driver's seat.
  • I checked my car manual and because our middle seat also has a built in cup holder/arm rest that flips out, it recommended behind either the passenger or driver.  We will do behind the passenger side- easier to reach back there.

  • We are putting ours in the middle. The back seat has side airbags which caused some concern so we were told the best place would be the middle.
  • We were told middle our passenger side - ours will go behind the passenger seat.  If you parallel park a lot you may want to rethink putting it behind the driver since you would be pulling baby out of the carseat while cars are driving by.

  • Ours will be going behind the passenger seat since that is where it is best for our car... There is a website where you can plug in your vehicle info and the carseat model and it will tell you where is best for your car =)
