My fiance and I opted for the Saturday track for our Childbirth Education Classes, which is two 8 hour sessions. Our first will be this Saturday, and then the other will be next week. I know the classes are probably all different, but I was just wondering what everyone else experienced at their classes. Were there multiple speakers, or videos, or what? I just want to get kind of a brief overview so I can know a little better what to expect. Thanks!
Re: Labor and Delivery Classes
Mine was very basic- it basically just emphasized that every birth, regardless of medicated, natural, c-section, etc. is a wonderful thing and they gave us some info on some common birthing experiences, watched a birthing video, and toured the hospital. Ours pretty much assumed that the participants knew nothing about the birthing process (which I'd say 6 out of the 8 couples didn't know anything- like some didn't know what an epi was and almost none of the had heard of an episiotomy!) and went from there. The did not go into laboring/breathing techniques. They did talk about what the hospital offered- jacuzzi tubs, birthing balls, etc.
It was honestly perfect for us, because I felt pretty confident that I had educated myself to where I needed to be without a big, indepth class, but DH was able to learn a little from the class and feel more comfortable with the birthing process.
Well I am taking a series of 4 classes and have only been to the forst one so far. There are 10 couples altogether and the first hour was spent doing getting to know everyone. Teacher made the Dads stand in front of the room and make the introductions (your name, Mom's name, due date, doctor, favorite thing about pregnancy, worst thing about pregnancy, and what names you had picked out).
After that madness we went over some anatomy. Then we got out our pillow, blakets, and mats and went over some different relaxation techniques: breathing, meditation, massage (she showed the Dads how to give pressure relief on mom's back, hips, neck, and pelvis).
My next one is tomorrow. I really look forward to them...
