January 2011 Moms

are these things safe?

Was looking at that ultimate baby registry link - I totally get the idea behind these, but I know most aftermarket carseat stuff is a no-no.

Are newborn headrests/snuzzlers safe?

Re: are these things safe?

  • We didn't use one with DD, and her head didn't fall off ;)

Most of the infant carriers I've seen have removable padding that works for a newborn (I believe ours was for 11 lbs. and under) in much the same way.  Or I've heard of people rolling up thin swaddling blankets to put next to their heads in the car seat.

  • Not in the carseat, unless the carseat comes with some sort of removable padding/snuzzler-type thing.  They're perfectly safe in a stroller though - so if you wanted to take Aidan for a walk in your City Mini w/o the carseat while he's still tiny, it would provide good support for him there.

  • Not in the car seat but I used them in the bouncer seat, swing and stroller.
  • thanks ladies :)

  • All of these baby product threads make me feel so unprepared! I feel confident when it comes to caring for LO, but when I see some baby item and don't even have a clue what it is.. :/  hahahaha

  • Can you copy the link? I can't find. I'm curious to see what's on there.

Edit: Sorry.... I found it. Surprise

  • If your child needs support in the car seat, just roll up receiving blankets. This is what the NICU did when we took DD home at 4lbs.

This is also what my Graco car seat manual says to do.

  • I used the one my carseat came with.  And then when DD was a little older I used some that hooked onto her carseat straps to hold her head up when she fell asleep.
  • Our carseat has the extra newborn head rest padding already, so I don't know why we would get something like this for the car seat specifically.  I'd just use swaddling blankets/receiving blankets.
  • they recommend not using them at first because of the fabric behind LO head.  as pp have suggested just use receiving blankets on the side.  thats exactly what NICU suggested for DD.  they said that even though they come in the car seat doesn't mean that it's safe for baby right away.
