Critique my ruck carry please (PIP) -- think I'm doing something wrong

This is my new Ellaroo Ysabel, and I love it. I've finally started trying back carries, too, which really frees me up.

But I can't seem to get the ruck right ... DD slips around in there. Not in an unsafe way, just from side to side, and when her weight is leaning, it's uncomfortable for me. Any tips? She's 16lbs/26 inches and five months...would another back carry work better? Or is this normal?

 Here's how we start out:

And a few minutes later, she's leaning ...

  • I actually think it looks really good. I have a crappy low res monitor at work but the only thing I think might contribute to her ability to lean is it appears that there's some slack on the upper rail.  I know when I started back carries (and now when I'm out of practice) I tend to rush through the wrapping to get DD tied on.  Try hard not to do that and mindfully tighten each rail and the middle of the wrap to get a nice tight wrap job.  I do have to compliment you on how nice your seat is though -- your DD has a really good pocket there IMO and her knees look nice and high!  Good job mama!

    Also - gorgeous wrap!

I'm no ruck expert (ruckspert?), but one thing that stands out is she looks pretty low. She should be able to see over your shoulder.
I actually don't think she's that low but fred has a good point.  If you got her up higher you may be able to tighten better thus eliminating the sway.  I tend to wear my DD that low though -- I think it's a bit harder to get them higher in a RTIF but that's just my experience and I'm no ruckspert either Wink

  • You have her in a great pocket which is the hardest part of ruck - good job!

Your top rail does look loose though - it's not unsafe but that's what's causing the discomfort.  I find with ruck it's best to focus on tightening the top rail as much as you can - otherwise you get that uncomfy pulling.  As for how high - I do like wearing higher and it may be easier to get a tight top rail but she's not too low if you get it comfy there.

  • I second tightening the top rail.  That wiggle room will kill your back.  It could be your DD is leaning back while you are wrapping and you think it is tight when it isn't... Maybe try keeping a table top back until the top rail is nice and tight?

    Thank you! :P

And thanks so much, ladies! It's great to have an online community to ask questions like this, when you don't have a local one.

I'll try the ruck again tomorrow and follow up. :D
