So, last week we found out we were pregnant! Yay! However, it's made nursing incredibly uncomfortable. For those of you who've done this before, is this just a phase and will me and my body get used to it?
M has all of his teeth and it's never been a problem in the past but now he also seems a bit more restless (or maybe I'm more restless) and we've had some teeth/nipple grazing which just enhances the cycle of pain and soreness.
To top it all off I got a bleb yesterday and it hurts like hell. I'd like to continue nursing through the winter and would hate to quit on my worst days but weaning is looking more appealing. If there's hope that this is just a phase that might help :-)
Re: Pregnancy and nursing
OMG congrats!!!!!!!!!!!
No advice for you since I haven't tandem nursed. I have heard that LOs will sometimes self wean if mama is pregnant again since the milk tends to dry up.
Gah, all these BFPs are making me want to TTC, but we really need to wait.
Thanks webmistress! We're excited and surprised.
And CO, I hadn't heard that about 16 weeks. Interesting. DS never really asks to nurse so I could probably gently wean by not offering which seems selfish. Plus, now that he's in daycare pt, I'd ideally like to nurse through cold/flu season. But yeah, I'm hanging in there with you too.
I'm 8 weeks in and I don't think it hurts as much, but it's definitely still ouchy. I've also reduced our nursing sessions to twice a day (down from 4x). DD is still pretty attached to nursing but we're replacing it with lots of snuggle time. A few days ago I was trying to get DH and her up so that I could sleep just a bit longer and she said "I busy still snugglin" is was very cute. I'm planning on keeping up the 2 sessions, before bed and before nap, at least until my milk either changes or dries up in the 2nd tri. Then we'll see where we're going from there.
*Edit* oh, and congrats
Congrats!!!!
I've been really lucky and haven't really had any discomfort - but from what I've read, I'm in the minority on that. It seems like for most people the sensitivity does get better, but for others it sticks around. Sorry that's totally a non-answer!
How often are you nursing now? Maybe dropping a session would help some??

I am 35 weeks and still nursing my almost 1 year old. For me it wasnt bad in the beginning. Its getting more painful as the weeks go on. My supply did drop (from pumping 25oz a day and nursing, to pumping about 1 oz a day and nursing) Luckily Porter has not shown any interest in weaning, and if anything is nursing more now.
Good lucks and congrats.
Thanks!
He's really only nursing consistently twice a day, with an extra session thrown in every once in a while. I skipped our before bedtime session last night (more because of the bleb and sheer exhaustion than anything else) and he seemed to do fine this AM. I've been afraid to skip a session since he dropped to 2, but maybe if I can skip out sparingly when I really need a break, we can push through.
Congrats to you too!
I'll take props :-) Thanks! I agree that it's awesome how many people are making it work. It was funny, we told my mom this weekend. She called yesterday and says "I was thinking . . . ummm, I thought you said you were still breastfeeding".
Me: Yes, I still am.
Her: How in the world did you get pregnant?
Apparently her and my dad were discussing this because they both remember being told that they couldn't get pregnant while mom was BFing.
