RSV Shot

Anyone get this for their little ones?  I know you have to meet certain criteria but just curious as to who all else has tried/did use it.

Re: RSV Shot

  • i know of one mom who had it for her LO who was born at 28 wks...I think it is in the $1000 range per shot. we've also spent 3 nights at Dell for RSV (when my LO was 5 wks old). i really don't much about the shot, but ditto Rosie about research and if your insurance covers it. RSV is no fun!! :(

  • I'm pretty sure you have to have preemies to qualify for it.  It's very expensive - I think my friend said $1800 per shot or something crazy.
  • I'm not sure if things have changed since DD was born almost 3 years ago, but she didn't qualify for it. She was born at 32wks 4 days, and I think I remember them saying if she'd been born before 32 weeks, she could have gotten it-- or maybe it was just that before 32 weeks insurance would have covered it. It is a scary scary thing, and I wish it was available for all babies!

  • It is nearly impossible. The rules are that they have to be born before 34 weeks, be diagnosed with chronic lung disease...and there may be even more to it but I remember that much for sure. I have a friend who was due in July and had her little boy the same week as I had Rhett. He was a 26 weeker. He spent months in the NICU. He did not qualify for the shots. They appealed repeatedly and were denied every time. His company ended up shelling out all the money for it and the entire series cost...$15,000!! Indifferent I had a 36 weeker with lung disease who of course did not qualify. My boys got RSV at 5 months old and it was hell. Now I have two kids with chronic lung disease thanks to RSV. It sucks and I really wish the shots were easier to get.

eta: By his company paying for the shots, I meant the dad. That was probably obvious but I realized when I read it again that it seemed kind of ambiguous.

  • DS got it for because he was a preemie.  The hospital recommended he get it once he was discharged. He got the shot probably 3 different times. Not to big of a deal and he didnt have any side effects.
