3rd Trimester

anyone having/had the baby "turned"?

this is a totally foreign concept to me, but has anyone had this done?  i've heard it's basically the doc pushes on your belly to try to turn the baby more into position if they are breech.  is it painful?  does it work?  is it worth it (besides the obvious of avoiding a c-section)?  VERY curious on the details and how it all works!

  • One of my best friends had it done. Painful? Yes, to her. Did it work? No. Worth it? Yes, if you're trying to NOT have a C-section. She had to have one anyway.

  • How far along are you?  The procedure I believe you are referring to is an external cephalic version.  They are usually not done before 36-37 weeks because the baby can still turn on its own.  There are a number of risks including
    • Twisting or squeezing of the umbilical cord, reducing blood flow and oxygen to the fetus.
    • The beginning of labor, which can be caused by rupture of the amniotic sac around the fetus (premature rupture of the membranes, or PROM).
    • Placenta abruption, rupture of the uterus, or damage to the umbilical cord. The potential exists for such complications, but they are very rare.

Something you should definitely read up on if your considering having it done because it does involve risk, but so does a c-section.   Here is some info: https://www.webmd.com/baby/external-cephalic-version-version-for-breech-position  Talk it over well with your doctor and make sure you understand the pros and cons. I would probably ask him/her what their personal success rate is.  You may want to try some of the information/exercises found on the spinning babies website too.  My son is not breech, but was laying in a funny position, cocked to the side and stuck against the side pelvis.  I did these and he did drop properly.  It could just be coincidence, but I felt better trying and it did work out.  Good luck.

  • One of my friends had it done and it worked for her. Yes the doctor just pushes around on your belly to get the baby to turn. And yes, it does hurt. They gave her Nubain in her IV and she still felt everything.

  • I have kind of a fun story, basically "old wives tale-ish" but happened to work.... My bff's grandmother was told when she was pg that the baby was breech. A few days later she was nesting and ended up flipping the mattress (I'm assuming this was common years ago??) anyway, the movement and the weight of the lifting flipped the baby and she had a perfectly normal delivery! I don't think this would be recommended by doctors these days, but it's an on going joke with her family!
