GD ladies-Disturbing facts from the nurse today

So I have noticed that many people have higher numbers than me.  I have 120 or less 1 hour after eating.  I know that many people have to check 2 hours after eating.

I asked my nurse at the Diabetes place today.  She said that non-GD ladies typically are less than 110 and hour after eating, even after eating carb crazy foods.  So this is why my numbers are significantly lower.  They are trying to keep me closer to non-GD ladies.

The part that shocked me was when she started talking about kids and diabetes.  We all know that our LO's are at a higher risk of type 1 and 2 now, but they think it is because their pancreas' are having to work like crazy since we are bombarding them with sugar and such. She said even if our numbers are higher after eating the baby still may "seem" ok, but might have already had damage done to the pancreas.

Also she said NOW we have a 75% chance of getting type 2 in the next 10 years. Lovely huh?

If you want to read more on the person they based my numbers on her name is Lois Jovanovich.

Hope I gave someone some good info here.  I know it was eye opening for me his morning.  Guess I have more things to fret over now.

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)

  • Hey - excuse me for butting in. I'm lurking on 3rd tri a few days early and just got diagnosed with GD two days ago. I just started testing yesterday.

What are your ideal glucose levels according to your doc? What have yours been running? Sorry if these seem like dumb questions but I'm brand new at this!

  • It is always crazy to me how much different information is out there.  My doctor (as well as my father's endrinologist) say that I have an increased risk later in life of developing it, but I can delay it or not get it at all by watching my weight, diet and working out.  And this time I around I techinically passed the 3 hour and supposedly I do not have it.  I have never heard the 10 year thing or the 75 percent chance.

  • My endocrinologist told me that there is an increased risk that can largely be avoided by eating well and exercising regularly.  I have done research and found a 40% increased risk within 10 years though.

  • My morning fasting number should be between 60-90.  They have been in the 80's so far.

My one hour after eating numbers should be at 120 or below.  This is where I have seen differences in people.  Lots of people have a 2 hour number instead of a one hour number.  My place is crazy strict!  I have been averaging in the 100-115 range.

    Good Luck!

  • See.  It is weird how everyone has different numbers and "facts" . She kind of through me for a loop this morning with the 75% thing.  I thought it was lower than that as well.

She also informed me of a change getting ready to come in the GD testing world.  Apparently right now you have to fail 2 numbers I think to get tested.  9I failed the 1 hour so hardcore i didn't get to take the 3 hour)  In the near future you can only fail 1 of the 4 sticks.

I don't know if this is a hospital specific thing, or a whole medical change though.

  • My OB said there were changes coming NA-wide to GD testing later this year.  He said that instead of having the one-hour and three-hour test, there will be just one two-hour test that will be pass/fail.  He said that the current method just finds 3-5% of pregnancies with GD and the new method would find almost 17% with GD.  Interesting.
