a few grilled cheese questions

When you feed your LO grilled cheese, do you make it like you would for yourself?

do you butter both sides of it?

do you use real cheese or processed cheese slices?

how toasted do you make it?

i've never given it to DS but I think he'd really love it. just want to make sure i do it right lol

  • I was sooooooooooooo going to post the same thing!

  • I don't butter the bread and I use real cheese (either jack or cheddar).  I make it fairly toasted, but definitely no where near being burnt at all.

  • Butter on both sides

    Processed American Cheese

Use pizza cutter to cut off crust

Use pizza cutter to cut in tiny bite sized pieces (after it cooled a bit)

Toast it just normal...not overly burnt or anything...

  • I personally like a lot of butter on my grill cheese but know its not healthy so i do just enough on the LOs so it doesnt stick to the pan if any at all.  I also use real cheese not the fake pre wrapped pieces.  we only buy the ral cheese i hate the taste of the kraft stuff.

I toast it just like i would like mine.  not to dark not too light.  usually just enough to melt the cheese.  I tend to squish the LOs grill cheese flat so they dont have to fight such big pieces.  other wise when its done i rip it in pieces or use a pizza cutter then let it cool to room temp or slightly warm.  They love it!

  • I make 1/2 a sandwich for Trevor.  Instead of buttering the bread, I just put a little butter in the pan or on the griddle and swirl the bread around for a second after the butter has melted.  And I use Land O Lakes sliced deli cheese, since that's what we having in the house for DH's lunches. And I toast it just like I like it, not too dark.

  • I make it just like I make for myself.  DS freaking loves grilled cheese, and we will order it for him if we're out to eat.  It's more of a special treat type thing for him, and since he normally eats healthy, when I do make him a grilled cheese at home, I just do it the regular way with American cheese, buttered bread and toasted till brown!

  • I don't know if what I give him is considered "grilled" cheese. I lightly toast some bread in the toaster, and while it's still hot I put a slice of cheese on there so it melts a little, press it down cut it up and give it to him. He likes it just fine without any butter or anything. I've even put some turkey in there a few times.
  • I have never made a grilled cheese specifically for Georgia, but I have given her some of mine....

    1. butter both pieces of bread
    2. only real cheese, fake cheese is nasty LOL
    3. toast in frying pan until lightly browned

She was overly thrilled with it, but I used old cheddar and I think that was bit too sharp for her liking....

  • I use american cheese and I lightly butter both sides then i put it on a pampered chef stone and bake it in the over 350 for like 10 min. This way it does not get as squishy/greasy ... oh and i use wheat bread

that is a great idea, i never would have thought about ordering it for DS at a restaurant. Thanks! :)

  • I use a little butter, whole wheat bread, and shredded organic cheddar. He likes it. I do something similar with a tortilla for a quesadilla, but I add black beans for a bit more protein. I cut both into strips for him to grab and gnaw on.
  • I do make it just like I would for me!

I butter both sides of wheat toast, a slice of american cheese (for me I use 2), avocado, and toast.

I make it evenly browned on both sides--I don't like mine overly toasted so I don't make it that way for LO

This is how we do it too.  But I might just have to try it with some butter next time..

  • I actually brush olive oil on each side, use cheddar cheese and grill it in the frying pan. I toast it just as much as I would mine - DD loves it!

Ha, I just don't see the need to bring a spatula and pan into the situation. If I'm making them for SO or something then sure, but just us..nah
  • I make it just like I make it for myself.  Buttered both sides, real cheese (usually cheddar, but I also like gouda, swiss, etc)

  • I lightly butter both sides, so it won't stick to the pan. I only real cheese (ugh, can't stand processed cheese. So gross), usually cheddar or colby jack. I use whole wheat bread and toast it just long enough for the cheese to melt. I make it the same way for myself, and when she has grilled cheese for dinner, so do I.

  • When you feed your LO grilled cheese, do you make it like you would for yourself?  I use just a small amount of butter on each side. I use real sharp cheddar, Swiss, or Colby cheese. I always add chopped spinach, and sometimes also add a black or kidney bean spread or hummus. She loves grilled cheese, so it is a great way for me to sneak in extra healthy stuff for her.

Do you butter both sides of it? Yes. Just a small amount though, because I use Pam spray.

do you use real cheese or processed cheese slices? Real!

how toasted do you make it? Lightly brown.

  • I make 2 as if they were both going to be for me.  Yes, butter on both sides and I use Kraft Singles.  Grilled enough, but not burnt or squished.

  • We've only given DD grilled cheese from a restaurant, but if I were to make it at home too, I'd do it "normally" - i.e. whatever way I eat it - sometimes with processed cheese, sometimes block cheese, butter on both breads, toasted on each side.

  • I made DDs like mine(for the first time today)- American cheese, whole wheat bread on the Forman grill-no butter/oo necessary. She loved it!
  • I use olive oil in place of butter.  I use real colby jack cheese and make it really crispy.

You realize crust won't kill your kid, right? Why start that habit now- let them decide they don't like it later, and make them pick it off themselves.
