2nd Trimester

jury duty

so i know i had jury duty this week and really didn't want to have to leave the classroom so early in the year, but I lucked out and didn't get called in till tomorrow.  But I have a bit of a scheduling conflict--my next ob appt is tomorrow at 3:15....does anyone know if they'll let me out of there to go? I didn't want to cancel the appointment b/c i have had cramping again this week, plus we are hoping to verify the one LO in there!  or will I need a dr's note?

thanks!

Re: jury duty

  • I am not sure, but last time I went, they gave people a little while to come up and discuss why they may have to leave. I'd think that cramping and an OB appt may be sufficient.

  • You may be able to get out if you mention that.  They are pretty strict though.

I was exclusively BF'ing my son and they gave me a HORRIBLE time trying to get out of it.  DS refused to ever take a bottle and they basically told me i needed to wean him or get him to use a bottle.

Luckily DS weaned himself before my day.

Yeah...my pics were so old. I got 3 kids. Nuff said. :)
  • I'd change the appointment.

They're not likely to excuse you from jury duty and postponing it makes it so that you HAVE to go next time, no matter what. And that'll be close to your due date or when you have a newborn.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • well, apparently i live in a county with a very understanding courthouse and judge presiding!  The first thing is that I walked in with a bag of food (breakfast, lunch and several snacks) and water bottles, and saw a sign that said No Food or Drink allowed past this point.  I explained to the officers scanning the bags that I understand but would I be able to bring some items with me, just in case for the morning sickness.  They let me bring all the food and water in, and told me if I felt ill to please let an officer know so they could get me into a comfortable area to feel better!

Then upstairs, after signing in, I had to use the ladies room and missed all the directions.  I saw the woman in charge in the hallway after they moved us to a holding "court" room, and apologized for missing the information, and what was I supposed to do.  Then I asked where could I bring my snack/ breakfast to eat since we weren't allowed to eat in the courtroom.  She told me not to worry and as long as I didn't have a picnic I could eat in the courtroom while I waited.  The woman standing next to her then said if I did have a picnic to eat I could bring it to her cubicle and we could eat together.  They were so friendly!!!!

By the time the judge started, he told us the 3 things that could get us dismissed right away (citzenship, not being able to sit for 2 hours without interruption, and i forget the third), and since I absolutely can't sit for 2 hrs without getting up to go to the bathroom, or drink water, I got in line, figuring what could it hurt!  and sure enough, the judge told me they don't want pregnant women on the jury anyway, just in case there are interruptions!!!  I was out by 10:15!  (and they let a dad of a newborn out too b/c he was too exhausted to stay awake through the trial!)

so, all in all a good experience!!!  i'm sure i'll pay for it next time though!
