::rolling eyes at myself:: does walking help?

Ok, I admit that I get sick of the emails about ways to induce labor, yet still I can't stop myself from asking....

I hear that walking is one of the best ways to move things along, but do you have to already be in early labor for it to help?  Obviously walking is a healthy activity for all of us, but it hurts so much and I am so slow, so I don't want to put myself through that torture if it's not going to do anything.

Thoughts?

Re: ::rolling eyes at myself:: does walking help?

  • I walked a ton since my last appt, where I was not dilated, about 50% and baby was high. Baby's head is low now. No dilation and still 50%. So maybe it helped him drop?

  • I think walking helps. You're making your muscles move, you're making your heart beat faster, you're taking deep breaths. Worst case scenario, it won't speed up labor but will help you relax by putting your mind off things for a little while?

And no one says you have to walk 5 miles or meet a certain speed for it to have an effect. I would think 30-45 minutes of activity is good at any pace.

I've walked a bunch and it hasn't gotten me anywhere yet. According to MIL, that is because I need to take big strides. (WTF MIL!?)

LOL, didn't your MIL also email you asking you to go into labor while she is in town?

Big strides = pelvis breaking in half

Sheesh, you would think she knows that.

  • Our midwife is an "anit-walker" and she says that walking while in early labor is actually a bad thing. She said you should rest while you don't actually have to do anything (push) and that (the more interesting thing) you don't want to put pressure on your cervix while it's still dialating...it can lead to issues during active labor.  I'm a first time mom, so I can't speak to what actually works, but this was a perspective I hadn't heard until our class.  Food for thought...

  • This just shows, again, that nothing works for everyone and there are 10000000000000000000 opinions on everything you can do.

No wonder everyone offers unsolicited advice... even if your doctor disagrees, there's probably someone, somewhere that it worked for =/
