Trying to Get Pregnant

Flu (Shot) season again?

Let me just say, blech. I usually have a decent immune system, and manage to make it through flu season without the flu...or a flu shot. This year is a bit different, however, as I'm hoping to become pregnant sometime soon, and the last thing I want is to get the flu when I am pregnant. So, since I'm out of the running for pregnancy at this exact moment, I guess I'll have to take my father's advice and get a flu shot...which means, inevitably, that I'm going to get the flu. Better now than later I guess, though I'm so not looking forward to it, especially if getting sick throws my cycle for a loop. Maybe I'll get lucky and manage to get the flu shot without getting the flu. What do you ladies think? Do any of you plan on getting the flu shot before getting pregnant?

  • I plan on getting the flu shot, but like you I make it through the flu season without the flu or a flu shot.

  • I will not be getting the flu shot.. The only time i did get it, i ended up with the flu 2 days later!!
  • I've never had the flu shot, and I only had the flu once, when I was in college.  I was pregnant with my son during flu season and I was fine.

For some reason, I'm feeling like I should get the flu shot this year though.  I've never felt compelled to have it (obviously) but I might get it this year, since my gut seems to be telling me I should.

  • I've only skipped the flu shot once and that was the worst flu season I can remember for myself. I got both strep and flu and would get rid of one to get the other. I was sick for nearly 3 weeks. But when I get my shot, I normally don't get sick that year.

  • Will you absolutely get the flu if you get the flu shot? I haven't had the shot since I was a child but don't get the flu either... Last year however, my entire office had H1N1. So, this year I'm wondering if it's worth it to get it...

This is how I feel. I worry a bit about H1N1 as well, and being pregnant at the same time. So I guess its a flu shot for me, even though that almost always results in a case of the flu soon after. Supposedly it's a "mild case" though, compared to what you could get without the shot. At least that's what I'm told...Hmm

I think it's different for different people. Not everyone does get the flu after getting a shot. Some people do. I guess I'll be taking the chance because I'd rather get it now than risk it when I'm pregnant.

I feel this exact way! I just said that to a friend at work. I'm worried about getting sick after the shot (I've never gotten the shot before). But I really really feel like I need to get one this year. I think I will call my Doc and ask her opinion. If she says its a good idea while TTC I will do it. I've never had the drive to get one but now I do.

  • I've never gotten a flu shot, but I have gotten the flu in the past (twice in one year once... yuck). This year I am working on a college campus with lots of germs around, so combining that with TTC, I think I will be getting one.

When my sister was KU last winter, she debated getting a flu shot because she had reactions (rashes, etc) to immunizations when she was young. But she ended up getting it and was fine.

FWIW, I read a credible study last year that said you can't get the flu from getting a flu shot because the virus is "dead" in the serum. But it seems it does happen to people, so who knows.

  • I am getting the flu shot. I have to go to Puerto Rico for work and it is recommended before traveling there.

  • You can't get the flu from the flu shot since it is a dead virus. If you do get the flu right after you get the shot, it just means that you were exposed to the flu before you got the shot.

I always get the shot and never get the flu. I always seem to get a cold right before I get the flu shot, as if it is a reminder to bother my mom to bring home the shot, lol.

You were already gettting sick. I am a RN, and one thing we work to promote is mis-information on the flu shot. You CAN NOT get it from the shot.

I was asking our staff Pharmacist on my unit last week if it was safe in the first trimester of pregnancy. You will notice it's catagory C, which made me nervous. However, that is because we really can't conduct clinical trials on pregnant women. He did some homework and said it is safe.

It is much riskier to get influenza (TRUE influenza - which means respiratory complications, not just a tummy bug) . I will be getting mine this week.

  • I got a flu shot once, and I emphasize, once. I ended up with the worst flu I've ever had in my adult life. I will never get one again. I even chose not to get one when I was pregnant with DD#2 and I was just fine.
  • You cannot get the flu from a flu vaccine, so I hope that is not what is keeping people from getting a flu vaccine.

    https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm

I will absolutely be getting the flu vaccine this year especially since we are TTC.  Pregnant women have weakened immune systems and are at a higher risk of complications from the flu.  I had a terrible flu around 10 years ago that took a month to get over.  I want to take every precaution to not compromise a potential pregnancy with the flu.  That being said, it is recommended that pregnant women get the "flu shot" and not the nasal spray vaccine.

Good to know jb2rn. Thanks for the info! I did know that the virus is dead, but it always seems like the people around me that get the flu shot end up sick anyway! I'm getting mine this weekend, so it'll be all taken care of before we conceive anway.

  • I also wanted to add that the flu vaccine is prepared each year with a mix of the strains or viruses experts believe will be the most prevalent in the population that year.  In other words, the vaccine does not protect against every strain of the flu.  Thus, it is possible to get the vaccine but still contract a different strain of the virus.

  • I have never received the flu shot; I haven't had the flu in 10+ years and I tend to ride out the season just fine. However, I signed up for the short this year since we're TTC. If we weren't trying, I wouldn't get it.

  • Just had this talk with syn.  They have a free flu clinic at work today that ends at 6.  So I have a couple more hours to make up my mind.

I have never gotten the flu shot and I have never had the flu (at least in my adult life).

The ONLY reason I am even debating it is bc we are TTC.The fact that Syn isn't getting it makes me feel like I should at least get it in case he does get the flu(he hasn't had it in about 4 years).

Having to make this choice is not good for this indecisive Libra :-/

I did indeed. :) It's such a beautiful building. I noticed you are from (in?) Utah as well. I was going to ask whereabouts, but wasn't sure you'd want to post that information online.

  • I get the flu shot every single year. I am a  preschool teacher so it is kind of a must for me. My babies are always sick and I am sick right now so I fo sho don't want the flu. I have never gotten sick from the shot. I only get the regular flu shot I don't trust all of the new flu shots yet they are too new. I know that is probably crazy of me, but I go for thegood ole fashioned flu shot. HTH = )

YesTHIS!!! I am an RN also and couldn't agree more with this above info...PLUS - this year the flu vaccine includes coverage for the H1N1 strain! (like 2 for 1 special! :) ) Like PP said - if you get "the flu" after the fly shot either you were infected before you had the vaccine or you have gotten a different strain than what's in the vaccine...HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! :)
