What does your LO sleep in during winter?

Now that it is getting cold outside and in our house too, I'm struggling with what to dress DS in for naps and overnight.  Last night I had him in a long sleeved onsie and his swaddle blanket and he woke up in the middle of the night (which he doesn't usually do).  When I went in to check on him I cold tell he was just cold- legs and feet were freezing! But I want to be sure not to overheat him either, what do you dress them in?  And advice would be great, our house is old and drafty so it's just gonna get colder. Thanks!

  • She wore a onesie and footie sleeper (fleece or terry, usually) and we swaddled her in a SwaddleMe until she was crawling.   This winter, we're thinking about giving her a real blanket in her crib (since she sleeps with an entourage of stuffed animals and a pillow) to keep her warm.

  • Last year when my son was your son's age, he slept in a onesie, a pair of socks, and a fleece swaddle blanket.  His arms and legs were inside the blanket and he stayed toasty.  If you're using a cotton blanket instead of fleece, you probably need to add some socks or switch to a warmer blanket.

Both of my sons now sleep in fleece footed sleepers in the winter.  I add socks under them on sub-zero nights.

  • DS1 was born in March, so it was only "cold" for a few weeks.  We dressed him in a footed sleeper + fleece swaddle blanket.  When he started to break out of the swaddle, we used the sleep sacks over the sleeper.  I plan to use the same basic sleep combinations for DS2.  For some reason, we never used a onesie to layer; but I know a lot of parents do.

This.  If it was really cold I put a onesie under a sleeper and socks, then the fleece swaddle-me, and a receiving blanket tucked around the swaddle-me.  DD's room though is freezing in winter so we added the extra blanket since she wasn't rolling around yet.  Once she turned into Houdini and broke free of the swaddle at 3 mo. I switched to fleece wearable blankets (I'm blanking out on what they're called) and no extra blanket on top.

ETA: sleep sacks!  Man I need a nap.

  • We've been doing a footed sleeper and a fleece sleep sack

  • Thanks! Sounds like it's off to get some fleece- and maybe find some socks that stay on, if that's even possible Stick out tongue

  • Since the day she was born she has slept in a sleeper and we will continue to do that, but also putting socks on underneath her sleeper because her feet get cold.  I also put a blanket on her as well, but not swaddled..... flame away! ;-)

  • At your son's age, Ava was wearing a cotton footed sleeper and a fleece swaddle wrap.  Charlotte was a little older during her first winter so she was over the swaddle stage and she was wearing a cotton footed sleeper and a fleece Halo sleep sack.

I think there was a short period of time that I was also putting a onesie under the sleeper, but I stopped doing that because of the sleep sack being fleece - that's plenty warm and I worried more about overheating/SIDS than I did them getting too cold (which I don't think they ever did).

Old Navy!  It's the only place I'll buy socks for the girls!  (Although I suppose Gap would be the same since they are the same company).

  • My LO sleeps in a onsie, footed sleeper, and cotton Halo sleepsack.  He seems pretty comfortable to me.  He also has a small fan going in his room (SIDS risk precaution and white noise).
