Anyone know anything about ovarian cysts?

Last month my RE found a cyst on each of my ovaries, so we decided to take a break month to see if they went away.  I was told that the cyst would inhibit the effectiveness of IVF stim drugs.

Today (one month later) I went in for a day 3 ultrasound  + blood work.  The left cyst is gone but the right cyst has grown to 2 inches in diameter.  RE wants me to take another break month, and if the cyst is still there next month he'll prescribe something to help it go away.  I'm not in any pain, and have never had any ovarian cysts before (that I know of).

Does this sound normal to you guys?  Anything I should be worried about, or any other questions I should be asking?

Re: Anyone know anything about ovarian cysts?

  • What about using BCPs to shrink the cysts?  I think many REs do this.

Really good suggestion, but I think he's hoping to avoid that for me.  I have diminished ovarian reserve so I'm a poor responder to stim drugs.  Apparently if I'm on BCP too long it over-suppresses me.

  • I used to get cancelled every month after a failed injection cycle. I would always have a few cysts left over. They would go away after sitting out a month but hopefully that stinker will be gone next month.
  • It sounds pretty normal to me. Mine have always gone away or shrink enough after one break cycle, but my RE would probably do the same as yours. Hopefully the one on the right goes away this month!!

Are you still seeing Dr. K? I had one of my IVF's delayed because of insurance and had already started BCPs. So, I ended up taking them for two months instead of one month. He said it would be ok, so long as I took the placebos in between and didn't stay on the active pills continuously the entire time. I am also a poor responder and he didn't want to over-suppress me either.

I am DOR as well and I am always concerned about over-supression, but my RE doesn't worry about it.  I take BCPs for about 3 weeks before stims.  I never make a lot of eggs, but I don't think it is because of the BCPs - I am just DOR.

  • Thanks for the responses everyone.  It sounds like this is a fairly common thing, so it's good to know that I can take my REs advice and not worry about it too much.  HollyMichael, I'm sending you a PM about Dr. K.
  • I've had ovarian cysts quite a few times and each time I've went on BCP and they've shrunk (that's been during IF treatments).

I have had surgery to have cysts removed 3 times (previous to starting treatments) because they were too large to try to shrink w/BCP for fear that they would cut off the blood supply to my ovaries.
