low amniotic fluid question

Monkiem's post made me think about this after a friend of mine also went in for a growth ultrasound and was told she had low amniotic fluid and needed to get induced immediately...

If you don't HAPPEN to go in for a growth ultrasound when your amniotic fluid is low, how on earth would they know?

Re: low amniotic fluid question

  • I was wondering the same thing.

My doctor doesn't do any ultrasounds past 20 weeks unless he suspects something is wrong.

  • I also was wondering that too? Maybe if your fundal height is measuring too small then they do one? I haven't had a medical U/S since 25 weeks I think.

  • I'm no expert, but I believe they would do a growth ultrasound if you were measuring small (in comparison to how you have been measuring throughout your pregnancy).  If all of a sudden your growth stopped or decreased, I imagine they would do a growth ultrasound to test for that.

  • My doc feels my belly every appointment to see where LO is and I am assuming making sure growth is on target. I am guessing that if he was concerned about the size he would then ask for a U/S.

  • with my first I had low amniotic fluid...I only found out AFTER I had him.  He was born at 33 weeks, BUT the last month I was pregnant, EVERY time he would kick or move, I would drop to the ground because it actually HURT.   I knew there was something amiss, but my dr at the time was a JERK and said it was no big deal.

    Hence, lesson learned for me.

    Hope this helps!!

  • I am going in on Friday because I had been measuring a bit higher all along except for the last two weeks (measured at 36 weeks again for both) - my OBGYN does not normally do them past 20 - unless they are concerned about this.  (Of course this makes me feel just DANDY!)  ;o)  His heartbeat is strong and he is moving - however they do want me to check movement more than before.  I assume unless you measure low they may not have the need to check?
  • I think you'd be measuring "off," have decreased fetal movement, and usually when my MW feels around for the baby she comments that it feels like I have plenty of fluid.

  • Maybe I'm just the lucky one, but I went in for an u/s today because I am past due and the baby is measuring large. It seemed like very common practice for my OB though I don't know for sure. At any rate, because the baby is large and I have a low fluid level, they are inducing today.

  • Your Dr or MW should be checking your fundal height every visit.  If that is off, they should send you for a growth u/s as you get further in your PG. I think I am correct in saying, movement of the baby is also a good indication of fluid levels.  Anyone know if this is factual???

Not sure if you're saying more movement = more fluid or what, but in my case, the kid moves constantly (u/s tech remarked on it today in fact) and I still apparently have a low enough level requiring me to have the induction today. Of course, this is anecdotal since I am only one.

  • My doc sent me for an ultrasound with my son at 37.5 weeks because my stomach had been measuring normal all along and then started measuring small towards the end.  I went in for the ultrasound, found out my fluid level was 4, was induced, and my son was totally fine.  Had a great experience.  I asked my doc how they would know about low fluid if you were measuring normal, and he said low fluid is pretty common towards the end and many women just go into labor when their fluid is too low - he said our bodies pretty much know what to do and when to do it.
