Baby Names

You should probably be able to spell your kid's name.

At parent-teacher conferences, a mom signed in and spelled her son's name: D?javo'ntie

The very first thing I did when I met her was apologize that the school had his name spelled wrong in our system. (Imagine the shame I felt that all of his report cards and permission slips were going home with his name spelled wrong). I opened the admin page to fix the spelling from Dejiavo'nt? which we had in the computer to her hand-written spelling of: D?javo'ntie from the clipboard.

She looked at the screen and said, "No, that's right. I always get it mixed up."

WTF??? If you're going to throw scrabble letters on the floor and make up a name for your kid, pick one you can memorize. Just sayin'.

Haha.  I truly do wonder if this is how people pick their kids names sometimes!

Wow.  Just wow.  That is a good one.

  • O.K., this story takes the cake!

  • This is the kind of bad name post I like to hear; something with a story. Not just "Saw this name. Yuck!" every five minutes. Thank you so much, Strawberry. This made me laugh out loud. I'm actually still giggling at the "scrabble letters" remark! Well done.

Interesting that he picked a Spanish name that contains an accent mark. Or did he know it had one when he picked it?

My Spanish name was Cristina. I still adore this name. Anyone else remember theirs?

Haha. Anytime. Trust me, I have tons of stories in my line of work!

I didn't even make the connection that his Spanish name also has an accent mark.  I'm so used to seeing improperly used diacritics, that it didn't register.  I thought he picked it because it was simple. :)

Agreed - I like 'yuck name' posts with stories! And I took French..je parle Francais, tre un peu.

My first year was Elise (after my mom) and the second year, I just went with the French pronunciation of my name.

I took French throughout preschool, elementary and middle school and remember very little. I understand a lot more than I can actually say. I can't even imagine how Elise would prounounced with a French accent. For that matter I can't imagine how Angel would be pronounced with a French accent. Is it like the Spanish pronunciation- AN-hel? Let's just say the one year of Latin and three years of Spanish left a much bigger impression on me than the 9 years of French (maybe because I was younger at the time).

Yeah, I took sign language in gradeschool and we had Spanish teachers come in and try to teach us. I remember nothing. But I do remember some words that my step-brother repeated over and over and over again during his HS Spanish years..gato, banjo, lapiz etc. Not sure how useful that is for me though unless I want to take my cat and my pencil to the bathroom. Stick out tongue

And yes...I have a guy who calls me An-hel...I reply with 'don't call him ant hill" It's kind of a running gag.

  • This reminded me of an experience I had years ago. My father does a lot of humanitarian work and headed up a "kid's camp" type thing at a local project. It was an all day event so parents were dropping off their children and going on about their business. I was helping with a registration process to ensure that every child would be picked up by the proper adult. One woman filled out the form and then grabbed a name tag for her daughter. She filled it out, proceeded to stick it to her daughter's chest, then quickly peeled it back off and asked "Can I have another one, I spelled it wrong". That definitely took me aback. You should know how to spell your own child's name. What really threw me for a loop is when she rewrote it, stuck it to her daughter's chest and said "Have fun Chlamydia". I shyt you not. Sure, it has a nice ring to it, it's the whole std thing I can't get passed. No idea why. ;)

Are you sure this happened to you? It sounds like something that would be on Snopes.com. It also sounds like one of those cheesy emails that you get from your Great Aunt Helen.

If it did actually happen to you, you should make this into an email and forward it to everyone you know. Are you a writer?

Haha! I'm glad you said it before me. I read that and gave the whole thing the side-eye before quickly departing.

  • Yes this actually happened to me. No I'm not a writer. But thank you for thinking so. I take that as a compliment. :)

No. Seriously?? No!  I think I heard a rumor that in Germany (?) it is actually illegal to name your child something that will get them picked on.  We should consider that law.

  • Sadly, this story doesn't surprise me.  I had something *somewhat* similar happen to me a few years ago.  Student's name was Diontaye.  After the 3rd day of school, his mom sends me a somewhat nasty note saying that the T is capitalized.  I teach 2nd grade and we were practicing writing our full names, so I made sure D knew to capitalize his T.  D had a learning disability so it took some time for him to remember the capital T.  Finally got it down.

Mom comes in a few weeks later and is demanding to know why I have him capitalizing the T!!  So we went back to "normal", but I noticed that whenever his mom wrote a note, she had the T capitalized...

**Also, one of my colleagues has a student named Topagea.  It's pronounced Topanga.  Her parents liked the name, but didn't know how to spell it, so that was their best guess**
