I'm so stupid

I have class this evening so I pumped DS's dinner first thing this morning.  In my sleep deprived state, I took apart the pump to clean it, unscrewed the bottle from the pump and dumped the milk down the drain.  My morning pumping session is the only time I pump during the day so I'm afraid that if I pump later I a) won't pump enough for DS's dinner and b) I won't have enough supply to feed him during the day.  Do you guys think I should go out and get some formula or should I try pumping later and see what happens? (I used up all my freezer stash).

Re: I'm so stupid

  • In a pinch I have pumped in between DS's feedings throughout the day to make a bottle.  He eats about every 3 hours, so I would pump about 1-1.5 hours after he ate.  I can usually get about 1 ounce or 2 if I do that.

  • Are you using a double pump and have the second bottle? If so, I'd try pumping later (about a half hour to an hour after he's nursed) and adding it to what you pumped this morning. Well, actually, I'd try pumping later even if you dumped the whole session.  And I feel SO BAD for you about dumping it! If you don't get enough, then pick up some formula.

When I've had situations where I really needed to pump a bit more that day, I've been able to bump my supply a bit by drinking tons of water. Like an extra liter between sessions. Good luck, mama!

When you pumped in between meals, did you have enough for your DS when it was time for him to nurse again? That's what I'm afraid of, I do'nt want DS to go hungry during the day because I pumped out all his milk!

I never had a problem with it and I don't really consider myself to be someone that has an oversupply.  Like the PP said, drink lots of water too.  That does seem to help.

No I don't have a double pump, just a little Medela hand pump.  I'm chugging the water as we speak, I'll try again in a couple hours and see what I get.  I'm not against formula....it is just that I've worked so hard to get breastfeeding successful (and it was a LONG hard road) and so having to give him formula for such a stupid reasong after avoiding it for so long hurts my pride!

I know where you are coming from, I worked really hard too to get BF to work. My experience with trying to build up a stash is that LO never goes hungry as such. Even if I have to feed her right after pumping she will just suck more vigorously until milk comes out. Your body adjusts really quick the very same day. Good idea with drinking lots of water. Sorry you accidentally dumped it, I know I could have done the same. GL.

  • Pump as much as you can today, your baby is far more efficient than your pump, especially a hand pump.  He will be able to get all of the milk left in you out, and it will be more fatty and filling.  I have a medela freestyle and I can still feed DD after using it, I just might have to use both breasts which I rarely do anymore.

I don't blame you - I got all bent out of shape when DH accidently splashed out a couple ounces while filling bottles! And what Louise said here has been my experience, too. If DD nurses soon after I've pumped, she may have to work harder for the milk and may be clearly frustated, but eventually eats enough and is satisfied.
