Pre-E ?

Ladies I dont know if you can help me. Have any of you been to the dr office for your appointment and had really high BP, then gotten sent to the hospital for evaluation and while there your BP went back to a normal range so you were sent home?

I went to the hospital last week after really high readings in the office and once in the hospital for a day they went down so they sent me home, but then today at the dr office my pressure was high was once again so to the hospital I went but while there my pressure returned to a healthy range once again but I still have protein in my urine as well as high readings while at the office. Has anyone else experienced this? and what did they do for you?

Thank you so much for your help!

Re: Pre-E ?

  • Hmm, it happened once to me. I had high BP and +2 protein in the urine sample so I was sent to the hospital to be monitored. During that time my BP was back to normal. I did a 24 hour urine collection and that had slight traces of protein. They said my main problem was dehydration.

That was three weeks ago and they have been monitoring me since until today when I had an ultrasound and NST just to make sure completely that LO is okay. My BP level has been fine since and I was negative protein so they officially dropped the pre-e worry and I have resumed normal visits unless my BP is to spike again.

The difference bwteen us is that your BP spiked again where as mine did not. Are you under a lot of stress, smoke or had a lot of caffeine? Those can all be factors. Drinking enough water?

If you keep resuming to higher levels of BP and protein you may have beginning symptoms of preeclampsia. Best they jsut keep an eye on you until you go back to normal (if you in fact don't have it).

The twice weekly u/s and NSTs got very annoying but they were needed in case something really was wrong.

  • I've been being monitored closely for possible pre-e for about a month now, but fortunately have not actually been diagnosed with pre-e yet. It began with a high blood pressure reading at the office, and a small amount of protein in my urine. I was sent to the lab for blood tests, had to take a 24 hour urine test, and was asked to purchase a blood pressure monitor to use several times a day. If my reading is high (over 140/90) I am asked to rest and retest in a bit, and if it remains high I need to call the doctor or go to L&D.

My first tests came back fine, and my blood pressure remained stable (high, but not too high). After two weeks, my doctor asked me to redo my blood tests and 24 hour urine test to be sure there were no new developments. Again the tests came back fine, but as a precaution the doctor asked me to stop working at this time.

I'm having twice weekly doctors appointments now to make sure nothing develops and that both LO and I are doing well. If there is any indication of anything developing I will be induced right away, but I'm hoping to hold out until LO comes on his own.

Good luck, I hope that you don't have to deal with pre-e and that everything works out well for you and your LO!

  • This sounds exactly like me except I was seven weeks farther along so I ended up getting induced. I hope you feel better. My only advice is to monitor yourself and know the signs/symptoms so you can advocate for yourself and your doc/midwife can have all of the information. GL and I hope you and your LO stay healthy.

  • Thanks Ladies! I am not sure if I am dehydrated. I have been drinking a lot of water a day and during my 24 urine test my volume was great but i did have protein in my urine. Last Tuesday a specialist high risk dr diagnosed me with Pre-E but its interesting how my BP keeps going up then back down over and over.

  • This happens every week for me. My BP has been 140+ over 100+ for the past 3 weeks at my doc appts., but then when I go to my NST appts., my BP starts out a little high but never nearly as high as at the doc's and by the end of the NST its back in the normal range. Ever since my BP was first high 3 wks ago, I've now had to go in for twice weekly NST's, I'm now seen by a physician instead of a midwife once a week, and then I have to do labwork every week (I've had to get bloodwork done twice, usually do a urinalysis, and then done 2 24-hr urine tests with no signs of protein, some of my bloodwork came back a little off, but not alarming.)

Most recently my doc put me on some BP medication, so now I'm just waiting for my appt. Thurs to see if its gone down, it was normal at my NST yesterday, but like I said its always lower there, so I don't feel like its a good comparison. If I start developing any other signs of pre-e, I've been told they're likely to induce asap, but otherwise, they've told me that they probably won't let me go past 39 weeks.

  • Yep, this has been happening to me for the past two months.  I go to the doctor the reading is high or at home it is high for long period of time so I go into L&D for bloodwork and monitoring.  As soon as I'm hooked up to everything it goes way down and all my tests come back ok.  I think it's because I've been so worried about the pre-e at the doctors that I get stressed out when I'm there then when I see that the baby is ok on the monitors I go back to normal.  I was just in on Saturday night/Sunday morning because I woke up with bad headache at 2am and home monitor was reading 160s/100s for two hours.  When I got to hospital my bp went down to 110s/70s and all tests came back ok.  I know it's a pain, but so much better to be on the safe side because pre-e is not something to mess with!!  Good luck!

  • BP was high, did the NST and 2 hours later was sent home with a warning that I need to keep an eye out for any and all symptoms.

So far things have been good, but we'll see again on Friday.

They just told me to watch out for the symptoms, and if I think I am experience any sort of symptom to come in.

It will go down a bit on your left side. They will only keep you in the hospital if it is dangerously high and your labs and bloodwork come back not  good.

It is common to be high in the doctor office when you are just sitting down and then lower in L&D when you are laying down resting.

They diagnosed you with pre-e? Are you contining to do 24 hr unine collections? weekly nsts? any bedrest?

  • As of last Tuesday they diagnosed me with Pre-E after my first urine collection and blood work came back along with my BP readings. I am continuing 24 urine collections. And I have 2 NST's a week and after last Tuesday they have also put me on strict bed rest.
