Were you allowed to re-take tests that you failed?
I teach, and we have to allow kids the opportunity to re-test if they earn less than 70%. I just don't remember these kinds of concessions when I was in school. It aggravates me to see kids just blow off learning the material the first time, knowing they can take another test later. Not to mention that I have to sit with the student and re-teach them what they should've learned the first time. Sorry this is more of a vent than anything else, as I sit here grading tests.
Re: NTTGPR: When you were in high school
hell to the no.
Agreed. Unfortunately with things like No Child's Behind Left you get op's situation. (sub here
I don't know about retesting if less than 70%....that's interesting
I had a math teacher my Junior year help me with a Final I had. I had come to tutoring with her almost every day after school. She let me take the final after school one on one,(she read the test to me). I passed and it was great knowing that she cared enough to take the extra time to help me.
She said that I reminded her of herself in school, she did better on test if they were given to her verbally.

We weren't allowed to retest, but I do remember there being a curve on mid terms and final exams.
It seems to me that since the No Child Left Behind law was enacted, school systems now baby the students to the point where they are almost not expected to take responsibility for their own education at all, and instead everyone comes down hard on the teachers and suddenly it becomes the educators' faults for a student's progress (or lack thereof).
It really pisses me off.

I remember hearing about kids' athletic teams doing pretty much the same thing - if one team is doing a lot better, the other team will get an advantage and be given a chance to catch up. This way "everyone is a winner". Sorry, but my self-esteem did not come from someone paving the way for me in everything I did. My sense of accomplishment came from reaching goals on my own, and learning from my mistakes.
It's no wonder that kids these days are so bratty & irresponsible. They were taught that they didn't have to work for anything, it would all just be taken care of for them.

This exactly.
I'm not sure. I never failed anything so I guess I never asked. I know that most teachers usually offered extra credit assignments to pull up your grade if you needed or wanted to.
I graduated high school in 1998 though, and things are a LOT different now.
