Yesterday when I took DD for her 6 month checkup and her head measurement was off the chart! Her weight and height have always been in the 25-50th percentile (she weighs 15 lbs) but her head measurement isn't growing with the curve. It has gone from the 75th to 90th percentile and is now off the charts
The Ped. said the measurement wouldn't be a concern if it had always been off the chart, but since it isn't going with the curve (staying in the same percentile range) I have to bring her back in a couple months to be measured again and if it is still increasing they will have to check for fluid in her head. Has anyone else had this happen?? I have a big head myself so I'm trying to convinve myself her hed is just big and it's not a problem. She is developing normally otherwise.
Re: head measurement increasing
I have been dealing with this since birth. As soon as they pulled him out of me the dr. says "look at the size of melon on this kid"
Around 4 months pedi sent me to a specialist to have him checked out. He checked out fine, but wanted a head u/s to make sure. That came back normal also. I went back again to the specialist for a follow-up last month and his head is still growing, but he's normal otherwise. He wants to see us again in January and if it's still growing, they are gonna do more tests.
Ugh
(The pedi AND the specialist measured both mine and DH's head and turns out I have a huge head.)
Thanks. I can totally tell that LO has a huge head. It's really big. But he's normal. What size is your LO head now? I think last months Noah was 18 or 19, whatever it was it was off the charts.
DS had to have an u/s done as well. There are some big heads in our family, and all the test turned up was " benign extra axial collections of infancy" which essentially means there is some fluid outside the brain that hasn't yet been reabsorbed, and that it wasn't something to worry about.
Don't fret. A big head means a big brain. We're raising future rocket scientists!
Oh, I feel for you on this! Whenever someone starts talking about wanting to "watch" something with your child, it is scary! My DD1 had (has!) a HUGE head. Her forehead also used to bump out quite a bit (it's not as noticeable now!). Here she is as a baby:
You can see how big her head was--and how big her forehead was!
I was SOOO worried about it---and the pediatrician had us do a skull series of X-Rays to make sure that her plates hadn't fused or that she didn't have hydrocephalus (the fluid you were talking about). She had neither.
Then my pediatrician told me that he read a number of medical journals that correlated large head size with intelligence in children....and that has proven true for my DD1--she knows all her numbers, can count items, knows all her colors, shapes, etc. She is SUPER smart!! Here she is now:
So, try not to worry--I know it's easier said than done!!
I just added a huge pic (not sure how to make it smaller lol). I feel ALOT better now!
They didn't tell me the exact measurement, just that it was off the chart (I measured myself and it's around 17.5 inches)
I'm with ya'll ... I think our babies will be super smart
Noah has kinda the same shape head
Noah has kinda the same shape head
Wow--he totally does!! That's crazy!! I used to worry about it SOOO much! My DD1 still has a big head, but the forehead isn't nearly as noticeable now. I hope my pics gave you some reassurance too!!
Yeah I would say your DD doesn't have a big head anymore. I guess she grew into it.
This, exactly!
Yeah, it's not something I notice anymore...but it's still over the 99th percentile
If she is next to her cousins--who have really small heads--it's very noticeable. But not the forehead. She has really outgrown it
