Trying to Get Pregnant

prenatal vitamin question?

Hey girls,

Went to my preconception checkup the other day and my MD prescribed prenatal vitamins that are like horse pills and I will definitely not be able to swallow them.  I do have problems swallowing large pills and was wondering if anyone knew of any over the counter vitamins that were small or chewables that are still good quality prenatal vitamins?

Thanks!

Re: prenatal vitamin question?

  • I don't know about chewable or smaller but there are a few brands that make a gel cap type pill. They're about the same size but slide easier than others.

  • I know some of the girls around here take gummies. I think they may sell them at Target, but I am not sure about the brand. Hopefully, some one else with more info. will come along.

  • Do the gummies taste ok? I almost bought them at Target the other day because I figured theyd be easier but I got scared that they would taste awful.

I've heard that these gummies are pretty good:  Vitafusion PreNatal DHA and Folic Acid gummy vitamins

The only thing is, they don't have iron in them (this makes them gentle on the stomach), so you may have to take an iron supplement, especially if you get KU.

  • The VitaFusion prenatal gummies taste fine to me.. and most prenatals make me sick but they don't (i think the iron is what makes me sick and those don't contain iron) I'm about to try Rainbow Bright brand prenantals because they say they're gentle on the stomach, but i just opened them and noticed they're horse pills and i'm not good at swallowing large pills either. I plan on cutting them in half. If those don't work i'll be going back to the gummies.

  • for those of you who find it hard to swallow the pills, have you tried putting them in applesauce or pudding or yogurt? this can make it earier to swallow. Also can help with them being harsh on the stomach since you are taking them with food... def take PNV with food will help with absorption of the vit and be easier on the tummy!! GL!

  • ahh..good idea with the yogurt or applesauce! It never dawned on me to try this even though you are supposed to eat something with them! Thanks :)

I just bought these last week, and they are actually good. They taste just like fruit gummies. You should give these a try, but you need to take 2 a day. Oh, and I got them at Target.

  • I am actually on a chewable one my Dr said they taste like blueberry but they are yellow and smell tropical.. I dont chew them. They are Precare chewables.. HTH

  • Thanks Ladies!  I just went out and got the gummies :)
  • I have a hard time with swallowing large pills too. I use target prenatal.

  • I definitely recommend the Vitafusion Prenatals! It's the only PNV I can stomach and it tastes pretty good too. I even got my bestfriend hooked since she's planning to have a baby!

Here is a review I found: https://www.minnesotamamasmusthaves.com/2010/09/b2b-gummy-vitamins-review-360-value.html It has a link to the maker's website that has the supplement facts so check that out for info. The reviewer also has a years supply of gummy prenatals as a prize! I entered, lol. Here's to hoping I win. ;)

Yes  I've found it's a huge help to take my horse-pill pre-natals with a glass of milk or that drinkable yogurt.  They go down sooo much easier than with water.  Even fruit juice is better than water.
