Natural Birth

Any recommendations for what to use during labor?

Hi everyone - this is my first post to this board, so I am sorry to start off my intro with a few questions! As I've gotten further along with my pregnancy (I'm 34 weeks), I've become increasingly more interested in trying to have a natural birth and would love some advice. Can anyone recommend a relaxation CD or iTunes "songs" that talk you through visualization? Are there any good hot/cold compresses out there that you would recommend? What about a hand massager? Anything else that you may have used and appreciated during labor? Thanks!!! Smile

Re: Any recommendations for what to use during labor?

  • I would get hypnobabies, stat! LOL

Other things that were in my labor bag:

    plug-in fan

dried cherry pit sack (same idea as a rice sack)

rolling pin (FAVORITE item EVER...was used most of my labor for rubbing my back)

tennis balls and socks (for point pressure)

lotion for back rubs/foot rubs (no scent)

    food

If I think of anything else, I will let you know....

  • All of the things noted above were recommended by our birth class instructors....I never ended up using any of them except a birthing ball though.

I will say though, the fan was not recommended to us but I ended up using one at home throughout my entire labor.  "I'm hot, I'm cold, I'm hot, I'm cold" was how it went for me so the fan was a must.  But I will say the BEST thing was that my doula brought a tiny little battery powered fan to the birth center which she pulled out right after I delivered DD.  Man, was that nice!!!

  • We had a foam noodle (like one you use for swimming, only shorter) that I had DH dig into my back during contractions. It helped a LOT! We got the suggestion from another couple in our Bradley class. Also, read Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. GL!

  • Thank you for all of your responses!!! Running off to buy them now....
  • DUH, I had a birth ball, too. Lived on it....how could I forget! The rolling pin I had had a plastic rolling part, which stayed cool (felt good). It was a $ store bridal shower gift from my best friend....DS plays with it now and it totally brings back memories....I would never bake with it, but I let him play with it. It's sentimental...LOL

  • I liked the CD that comes with Hypnobirthing by Marie Mongan.  Listen to it every day/night up until you go into labor.  I found a rice-filled warm/cold compress that you throw in the microwave.  I liked that heated up and placed wherever it felt good while I was in the early stages of labor.  My midwife also placed pressure on my lower back during contractions and that felt nice, too.  A birthing ball is a MUST (at least for me it was, lol) but that was provided by the hospital.  Those are the things that helped me out the most during labor, in addition to the Bradley course we had taken and the books I read (Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way and Hypnobirthing).
