another ques about thrush?

Didn't want to hijack the last post but we found out my LO has thrush last night. He was not swallowing right or eating as much, and he seemed real fussy and wouldn't sleep all day. The white spots on his tongue wouldn't wipe off so they had us bring him in. They prescribed him Nystatin which we filled last night. He took his first dose around 10 and slept from about 11:30pm- 4am. ( the night before he was up every 2 hours) Now, all day today he has been sooo sleepy! He usually is up an hour or 2 between naps but today he wakes up, lets me change him, eats about 3 ounces and is falling asleep by the end, almost unable to finish it. When I try to burp him his eyes are closing and he's like, falling asleep during it. ( he's usually a big eater and had gas problems the last week, so around this time in the evening has been fussy.) He's just so relaxed and calm now, even his legs are relaxed like his gas is gone- his legs have been all squished up since he was born... I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the medicine?

Is Nystatin common/ safe? the side affects don't say that fatigue is a symptom... Or could it be that he's been so bothered by it that he just now is feeling better and can finally sleep? I'll feel silly if he's just fine and is just tired, but it's like I'm worried if he's awake too long, and I worry if he sleeps too much! He's only 11 days old, so I guess everything worries me...any thoughts/ comments?? TIA!

Re: another ques about thrush?

  • i don't know for sure, but he's probably just happy and relaxed now. as long as he's eating, he's probably okay. (but of course check in with your dr just to be safe).

i'm still wallowing in guilt over my poor daughter. i can't believe i waited this long to get help for her. she just always has such bad gas/constipation. until two days ago, i really thought that was it. and then, even when i noticed she seemed unusually uncomfortable, it was intermittent, so i kept thinking it wasn't a big deal. ughhhhhhhhhhh.

  • I would just think that your LO is catching up on missed sleep from not feeling well. I'm sure it's fine. Plus, babies will sleep more some days than others. :-)

  • Most babies do fine on nystatin, but my DS was on it for a week and then he became violently ill after taking a dose. We thought it was a fluke, but it happened 3 more times, only after having the medicine. His reaction is so uncommon that he completely stumped all the docs at our pedi's office and is no longer taking it.

  • Interesting. My LO is on nystatin too and has also been pretty drowsy. I was blaming the heat, but maybe its a side effect of the medicine... or of feeling better.

  • thanks for the responses! the Dr. said as long as he's not running a fever then the Nystatin should be fine. Shortly after I posted this he got up and was REAL fussy and was up the entire night basically, so I'm not sure what was going on...he doesn't seem to like taking the medicine but seems better after it so, we'll stick with it, I guess! Hopefully he'll feel better and all your babies do/ will too!

omg, glad everything is okay with your baby! that's what I was afraid of, that it was a reaction or something... but he seems okay now?
