3rd Trimester

I'm sure this has been discussed before....

BUT, what are you ladies doing about vaccinations for yourself, SO's?  I asked my Dr. at the last appt. about the pertussis vaccine, as it's been in the news latley, and she said DH could/should get it, and that she'll give it to me after delivery....but I've read some other Dr.'s are administering the vaccine during pregnancy.  What are you doing?

Also, Flu shots?  I've never had one and never had the flu in my adult life!  Even though I worked at an elementary school the past two years (I am not now)...My Dr. said it's really up to me...I'm not sure about it though!

Re: I'm sure this has been discussed before....

  • I've never done vaccines for myself. Only when I was little and had too.  So I don't plan to get anything.

  • At our labor and delivery class last week they told us to make sure that both DH and myself along with anyone else living in the household got the flu shot and our TB shot which includes the pertussis vaccine.

Even though you haven't had the flu before being pregnant/just giving birth lowers your immune system so there is more a chance that you will get it.

  • Pertussis-yes, I'm getting after delivery.

Flu- I learned today from another post that the immunities can be passed from mother to baby if you receive the vaccination while PG so I'm probably going to get that this week actually.

  • I'll be getting the flu shot more for the H1N1 part of it than the regular flu.  I don't want LO to have NO protection what-so-ever since one of my bosses is a pediatiric ICU doc and had several children die last year from H1N1.  My OB doesn't want me to get the pertussis until after I've delivered so I'll get it then.  SO needs to get it too.  He doesn't want a flu shot (has never gotten one) but I told him if he gets it (he had it last year) he will have to go to his parents and have them take care of him until he is better.  I'm not taking the chance of LO getting it and taking care of both of them.  He was so sick last year I can't imagine taking care of him and LO.

I think most OB's suggest you get the flu shot, but I'm not sure.

  • My doc's office gave me the flu shot at my last appointment (for what it's worth, other than a sore arm I didn't have any immediate side effects.) She also told me earlier that they typically give the pertussis vaccine after delivery.

I'm guessing it's because having the flu can be really bad for pregnant women (I think H1N1 was known to be especially bad for pregnant people to contract,) while pertussis is of greater concern once the baby's out. Just a guess though.

  • DH and I already got our flu shots, as did the grandparents.  We get it every year.  DH and grandparents also got their pertussis booster.  I will be getting the pertussis booster after I deliver. You cannot get pertussis when pregnant.  I am not in the business of pushing vaccines and such, but I think with the outbreak of pertussis in the country already, all new parents should make sure they get their boosters.  Pertussis can be deadly in newborns.

  • DH and I are getting the pertussis vaccine for sure. I am getting it right after i deliver and DH will have to go to the doc and get it. As for the flu shot, i am still undecided. DH never had the flu even though he works with kids, I even had the H1N1 last year and he still didn't get it so i feel a little bad making him get it for the first time incase he has a reaction to it. I have never had the flu shot before either and was probably planning on getting it but not till after i deliver. My doc suggested i get it now, and i know how everyone says it's better to get it now so you can pass immunity to the baby (which is tempting) however reading about it, and a link to the actual vaccine information says that it is not been proven to be safe during pregnancy. I really don't know about the flu one yet.
  • I know vaccines get a bad rap sometimes, but, I have an immune deficiency (and have had it my entire life) and even a minor illness could be strong enough to kill me, especially as a child, so I am totally for them (for myself) lol. I have had the pertussis vaccine already, and am getting this year's flu shots at my next OB appointment, and my fiance will get his flu shot with me, and pertussis at the hospital after our daughter is born. It's a personal decision for everyone, but vaccines are right for our family!
  • DH got his flu shot today and will get the pertussis vaccine before LO's arrival.  I'll be getting the flu shot when it's available at my OB's office (thimerosal free) and pertussis after delivery.

  • DH got the pertussis vaccine a couple weeks ago at my request, I'll get it after I deliver. We both plan to get the flu shot as well. I work in healthcare so it's extra important for me, DH basically does what I tell him to. :)

  • Already got my flu shot! I work for an eye Dr and see a lot of people everyday. DH and DS will get them too. I got the flu shot while preg with DS as well. Don't forget if YOU get the flu shot while preg it helps protect your LO!!! Newborns can't get the flu shot younger than 6 months!!!

  • I doubt we'll get our flu shots. We haven't for years. While I know that not having had it doesn't mean we won't get it, I also know that the flu shot is a total crap shoot because there's so many strains going around that they make an educated guess which one will be the bad boy this year. Flu shot guarantees against one of a hundred. We'll just be making sure to be extra clean and not expose LO to too many people.

  • I am getting the flu shot this week.  I doubt hubby will.  I work in pediatrics and got the tetanus shot with pertussis (It was called Adacel) 2 years ago, going to get the hubby his Adacel, hopefully in the next couple of weeks-he has not a has a tetanus in years.  I have been exposed to babies with pertussis in the past and had to take anitbiotics for it.  The pediatrician we will be going to also offers the shot to parents of newborns.
  • There seems to be a lot of misconception about the pertussis vaccine during pregnancy.  You absolutely CAN receive it during your third trimester and it is safe.  They just normally don't recommend it unless you're in an outbreak area (as do I).  It takes 2 weeks to become effective so if you were to be exposed to pertussis in those 2 weeks after delivery you could easily transmit it to your baby.  My OB gave me the pertussis vaccine at 36 weeks.  I also received the flu shot.
