BUT, what are you ladies doing about vaccinations for yourself, SO's? I asked my Dr. at the last appt. about the pertussis vaccine, as it's been in the news latley, and she said DH could/should get it, and that she'll give it to me after delivery....but I've read some other Dr.'s are administering the vaccine during pregnancy. What are you doing?
Also, Flu shots? I've never had one and never had the flu in my adult life! Even though I worked at an elementary school the past two years (I am not now)...My Dr. said it's really up to me...I'm not sure about it though!
Re: I'm sure this has been discussed before....
At our labor and delivery class last week they told us to make sure that both DH and myself along with anyone else living in the household got the flu shot and our TB shot which includes the pertussis vaccine.
Even though you haven't had the flu before being pregnant/just giving birth lowers your immune system so there is more a chance that you will get it.
Pertussis-yes, I'm getting after delivery.
Flu- I learned today from another post that the immunities can be passed from mother to baby if you receive the vaccination while PG so I'm probably going to get that this week actually.
I'll be getting the flu shot more for the H1N1 part of it than the regular flu. I don't want LO to have NO protection what-so-ever since one of my bosses is a pediatiric ICU doc and had several children die last year from H1N1. My OB doesn't want me to get the pertussis until after I've delivered so I'll get it then. SO needs to get it too. He doesn't want a flu shot (has never gotten one) but I told him if he gets it (he had it last year) he will have to go to his parents and have them take care of him until he is better. I'm not taking the chance of LO getting it and taking care of both of them. He was so sick last year I can't imagine taking care of him and LO.
I think most OB's suggest you get the flu shot, but I'm not sure.
My doc's office gave me the flu shot at my last appointment (for what it's worth, other than a sore arm I didn't have any immediate side effects.) She also told me earlier that they typically give the pertussis vaccine after delivery.
I'm guessing it's because having the flu can be really bad for pregnant women (I think H1N1 was known to be especially bad for pregnant people to contract,) while pertussis is of greater concern once the baby's out. Just a guess though.
DH and I already got our flu shots, as did the grandparents. We get it every year. DH and grandparents also got their pertussis booster. I will be getting the pertussis booster after I deliver. You cannot get pertussis when pregnant. I am not in the business of pushing vaccines and such, but I think with the outbreak of pertussis in the country already, all new parents should make sure they get their boosters. Pertussis can be deadly in newborns.
