What exactly happens during the NT scan?

Beside the u/s, what else do they do during the procedure? Do they do any bloodwork?

Re: What exactly happens during the NT scan?

  • They pinched my finger and took 5 drops of blood (or 4?)...but that's it.

  • Finger prick. Crying

I'd rather get fifty shots in the arm over a finger prick.

  • They actually took a vial of blood from me.
  • Depends on what the specific procedure you're having is.

Mine was the sequential scan - which was (in my case) an ultrasound and bloodwork at 13w, and then more bloodwork a few weeks later.  Both sets of bloodwork were a vial, not a finger prick.

  • Mine was only an ultrasound. I didn't give them any blood, finger, vial or otherwise for any tests... though I'm really not sure why?

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.

FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.
  • I had an ultrasound followed by bloodwork (a few vials!  Checking iron levels and such too though...).  More bloodwork follows in a few weeks.

  • Ultrasound and a fingerstick for a blood sample.  Not all test blood, but the majority do, and you're probably better off doing it that way.  I didn't see the fingerstick coming Indifferent

Oh yeah, that little drop of blood was more like sufficient blood to saturate about five or six spots the size of a thumbprint on a blotter paper.  The tech did enough squeezing and blotting that I had a bruise on my fingertip.

  • For me, it was an ultrasound Big Smile and finger stick IndifferentCrying at 13 weeks, then had to go back for a simple blood draw at 16 weeks. And found out the results about a week later.

I'd rather have 50 vials of blood taken the normal way than get one of those finger sticks. The stick lasts a millisecond, but I was still feeling it five days later. GAH!

    STM due Feb. 2017!
  • Ultrasound and a finger prick.  Thats about it :)

  • Mine was the ultrasound and blood taken from my arm at 12-13 weeks.  That was the first blood draw I'd had the entire pregnancy, I think my doctor tests for everything at one time that way.

  • During mine we first talked to a genetics counselor, who took down our family history, race, etc. Then after the u/s they took a vial of blood. I came back in at a later scheduled date where they took another vial of blood. I was mailed a card both times with the undetailed results, they sent the detailed results to my practitioner.
