sick LO advice wanted

So my LO is sick for the first time ever she is almost 8 months so I've been lucky. She has a runny nose and a bit of a cough but that seems to be at night. Her temp hasn't gone above 99. I don't know if I should take her to the Dr or not. She seems ok besides her cold and she is sleeping more. I also do not feel good and my throat hurts and I don't know if hers does. She is eating just like normal it's a little harder to BF cause of her nose.

Would you take LO to dr or wait it out? How long would you wait till you go? What do you do to take care of LO when they are sick?

  • Do you have a cool mist humidifier? That helps DS a ton when he's sick.  I would give it a day or two if there's no fever and she's eating ok. When DS had his first real fever (just past 1 year) we called the pedi to be safe. I hope she feels better soon!

  • Honestly, I would wait it out. Nothing the doctor can do for a cold.

When DD has gotten sick, I fill up the bathroom with lots of steam then take DD in & close the door for about 5 minutes or so.  Also, at night, put some Vicks vapo rub on her feet then put socks on her.  Also - while BFing, you might try putting a drop of peppermint essential oil on your breasts (but not on the area where she'll be latched) for her to breathe in a bit.  Just keep offering the breast as much as possible.

  • wait it out. Bunny's had 2 head colds already, and they're no fun. The best thing I've found is to sit in a really steamy bathroom for as long as you can stand it and nurse while you're in there. That will force airways open and direct the steam.

    Feel better, both of you!

Good advice.  I also give a dropper of Vitamin C (liquid form is available in health food stores) daily when LO is sick or gets a shot or any other time I want to help boost the immune system.

  • Try to keep LO's head elevated or keep LO upright to help things "drain"

  • I'd wait it out.  To help him sleep we do humidifier/vaporizer, prop the end of the crib, saline drops and snot suckering before bed.   Otherwise I just offer a lot of nursing, cuddles and sleeping in arms.   Also, as much as I mocked "special tissues" before I had M, boogie wipes help with the daytime nose wiping.
