Early baby language

So, I was curious about a couple things. Has anyone ever actually used those "baby can read" programs that teaches infants to read basically as soon as they can talk? Personally, not for me, but I am curious to see the opinions of anyone who has tried them or plans on trying it for their baby.

And, what I'm more interested about, is baby sign language. I heard you can teach a baby simple signs (hungry, tired, thirsty) to help them communicate what they want before they can even form words. Do you think this is true? Or has anyone had any success with this idea?

Re: Early baby language

  • yes, dh could say more and all done for quite some time before he used those words.

He still signs more all the time.

He signs more and say's please, so its kind of funny to us. At least he's polite.

I think your baby can read is a bunch of crap. But sign language is definetly very helpful!!

  • I am going to do baby sign language! My best friend used it and loved it. She could successfully communicate the basics with her daughter before her daughter was able to speak. She impressed a lot of moms with it too. Also, my aunt had serious fetal surgery, and my already struggling to live baby cousin had a stroke just a few days ago. Her doctors had her do baby sign language because my cousin was a very rare case and they weren't sure if he would have delayed speech or even ever be able to speak. He was fine, but my aunt was grateful for their baby sign language! I can't wait to use it.

  • We did signs with my son, and it was a life saver.  Not only was he able to tell us what he wanted before he could say it (avoiding tantrums!) but he could also prompt us to say the words, seeing and hearing them whenever he wanted to practice them.  Loved it!

  • As an English teacher/Reading Specialist there is NO TRUTH to babies reading.  It's not possible.  You reading to child, singing, and playing words games is the best preparation you can do.

But the sign language idea is legit and very cool.

I'm actually kinda glad to hear this, lol. People trying to make their babies into Einsteins before they're even old enough to comprehend the world around them makes me sad.

I'm even more glad to see that the sign language works! I think it would take a lot of stress off both me and baby if she can communicate what she wants in any way before she can speak. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for little ones to want something and not be able to get it just because they can't communicate, lol. SO is still skeptical about the idea, but hopefully I can still convince him before DD gets here.

  • I've seen the sign language thing done before.  Anyone know of any good books or videos that teach how to do this?  I know VERY little sign language that I learned in school years ago, probably won't help me much with this.  I'd be interested in trying though!

  • My cousin used Baby Signs. She didn't know sign language to begin with, but this system worked very well for their family! I don't know it either but plan on buying Baby Signs also. I remember seeing a little flip chart "cheat sheet" on their fridge with the most commonly used baby signs.

  • I'm definitely going to sign to my child. Be VERY careful showing too much TV to any child under the age of 2. Learning in 2D when our brains are designed to learn in 3D is not good for baby and has been linked with autism. As a teacher who works with getting young children reading, you have plenty of time!!!!
