A friend posted about her og heart burn today and some one posted about getting Papaya Enzyme. I have never heard of it before. Right now nothing works for mine besides tums and I'm taking 10 every 24 hrs which is the limit. And I can't change what I eat because everything gives me heart burn. I can eat a cracker and get hear burn.
Re: Anyone take Papaya Enzyme for heart burn?
I've taken it in the past, it works well. It helps break down proteins.
We did an intersting study in food science class, and pureed fresh papaya or pineapple actually took a pork loin from weigh 1lb to only 12 oz in 24 hours!
So, there is real science behind it working, it's good for indigestion in general.
I've seen it at a lot of health food stores, some pharmacies and I know Whole Foods and Trader Joe's both carry it.
Check the bottle, but I would say yes, all it is, is papaya and like some binder or something...I usually get the chewables.
I take a digestive enzyme from Whole Foods in which the two main ingredients are Bromelain (pineapple enzyme) and Papain (Papaya Enzyme). It works very well in preventing the heart burn in the first place -- which has been my biggest daily discomfort in pregnancy thus far. However, it's only effective if taken with meals -- it's not meant to be like a Tums where you take it whenever you have heartburn. If I have random heartburn not associated with having just eaten, I'll take something from Whole Foods called Acid Ease - which has slippery elm and marshmallow root at the two top ingredients. It is not as effective. I've taken slippery elm in a whole powder form before, and I find this much better b/c it actually coats my throat and digestive track. The pills help, but they aren't as good as preventing it in the first place with the digestive aid.
As an aside, Bromelain (pineapple) is also a natural anti-inflammatory for the mucus membranes of the body and is also a natural anti-histamine making it also great to take for allergies or those swollen pregnant nasal cavities.
My PG Bradley instructor swears by it.
Ooh, I will be near a Trader Joe's tomorrow, I didn't realize they had it.
More Green For Less Green
my doc recommended it so I think that puts it on the safe list, though I know docs will have differing opinions.
beware the chewables if you are sensitive to flavors, I think it tastes like vomit.
My OB put me on Zantac at my last appointment. VERY common for pregnant ladies to use this. My acid reflux was waking me up at night...throat full of acid. Since I started taking the Zantac it is 100% better!
