Did you STTN before you had kids?

I was reading the post about how so many people on the age boards want their LO's to STTN. I don't think I've ever STTN, myself. Ever since I was a kid, I have always woken up at least once to pee. At the end of my pregnancy, I literally woke up every 1-2 hours. I am so used to it now that I don't mind DS waking up at all. Now, if he was wide awake and wanted to play in the middle of the night, that would not be cool. But it honestly doesn't bother me if I get woken up for a few minutes every few hours. I can't imagine lying down and sleeping for 8 hours straight. I'm beginning to think I'm a freak.

Re: Did you STTN before you had kids?

  • I rarely did.  I used to take a long time to unwind and actually fall asleep.  Once I was asleep, I would wake up every 45 minutes or so after 3:00am.  I was usually always up about 1/2 hour before my alarm went off too.

    I guess I was/am a really light sleeper.

  • DD is actually a much better sleeper than I am. She can sleep for 10-12 hours straight once we get over all the bedtime shenanigans (she never wants to actually go to sleep, no matter how tired she is, but once she is down, she is out). I, on the other hand, wake up with tons of energy in the middle of the night if I go to bed too early (before 11 or so) and even when I go to bed around 11 or midnight, I get up a few times to pee.

Though it's rare, the problem when DD wakes is that it's not synchronized with my own body's natural waking cycle. So if I was just up from 1-2 am with tons of energy to burn and finally got myself back to sleep, it suuuucks if she happens to wake up around 3am.

  • I was just saying this to DH. Many grown-ups don't/can't STTN. Why would LO?

  • I could sleep for 12 hrs straight if I didn't need to wake up for anything. DH on the other hand wakes several times a night and thinks 6 hrs is plenty of sleep.

  • Yes. Both DH and I love to sleep. DD will sleep in too. It must run in the family.

  • Always! I slept like the dead. I would go to bed and nothing could wake me. Thunder storms, our house getting broken into and the alarm going off, the house down the street catching fire and the fire brigade turning up with the sirens going, nothing. Even at 35 weeks pregnant I wouldn't ever wake up, even to pee. I'd wake up in the morning absolutely busting but not at night.

Saying that though, DS wakes up once during the night to feed and it doesn't bother me one bit. I sleep so well with him beside our bed and his snuffling doesn't wake me at all but as soon as he starts shuffling for a feed, bang I'm awake. Strangest thing!

  • I don't think I've EVER slept through the night unless I've been knocked out by migraine meds... and even then.
  • Oddly, I sleep better since LO was born (other than nights when he doesn't sleep of course). Generally once I'm asleep I'm out, but as a child, teenager and younger adult it would take me ages and ages to fall asleep.
  • I usually wake up around 4 or 5 to pee also. I was really lucky when pregnant and it never messed with my sleep. I probably slept 9-10 hours with one pee break. DS almost has my same schedule. He STTN except for a quick wake-up around 4 or 5.

  • Yes.  Not every night but most nights.

But there is also a HUGE difference between stumbling to the bathroom for a pee whlist half asleep  that takes all of 3 min. vs. full-on feedings multiple times a night.  It's not just "a few minutes" depending on your child and how he feeds and goes back to bed.  Totally different.

  • I've always woken up several times a night - I flip over and go back to sleep.  Adding nursing kiddo to the mix really wasn't such a burden once I mastered nursing in bed.

Oddly, I still wake up right before he does if he ever wakes up at night - and we aren't even in the same room now!

  • Always. I am a HEAVY sleeper. I did have some insomnia issues when I was pregnant, but that was the exception, not the rule. One of the things that has amazed me the most is how quickly I wake up when J is stirring. I didn't believe everyone when they told me that's how it would be.
