Any relief from pubic symphysis pain?

Anybody have extreme pain in the pubic symphysis area?  I have horrible pain right in the front, it feels like somebody's wedged a plier between my pelvic joint and is prying it apart whenever I move at all.

I'm planning on seeing a chiropracter for it, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone has had experience with this and if there is some sort of stretching or anything else that might help relieve the pain a little.  I can't even sleep because I wake up every time I move!

Thanks!!

  • I have psd or spd, its the same thing. Everytime I move, sneeze or laugh it feels like I am falling apart. I have found no relief so far. I sleep with leg up on a pillow and that kind of helps at night. I have to take tylenol before bed so when I roll over to get out of bed to pee I dont scream. It is awful and I am ready for it to be over

  • I've found no relief for mine.  My doctor said that I can go to a PT, but it wouldn't fix the problem and probably wouldn't help much.  My doctor also prescribed Tylenol 3, but I haven't tried that.  Regular Tylenol doesn't really help much.  Taking a bath every night helps a little.

  • I have this plus sciatica. My SPD started @ about 16 weeks and has gotten a  little better but there are still some days where I can barely put my pants on. Pelvic tilts are the only thing I've heard that works.

  • I've been wearing the Prenatal Cradle support device for a couple weeks, and although it's kind of weird to wear, it has DEFINITELY made me feel better! I'm not 100% but at least I can walk now. It just kind of helps take some of the pressure off your pelvic bone and your back, so I would recommend looking into it. Tylenol did nothing for me, but I'm also doing yoga exercises and stretches that focus on the hips, trying to keep them flexible and keep the joints strong. Good luck!!!

  • With my first pregnancy, my pubic bone didn't separate until my DD was coming through the birth canal.  So it was a pretty quick separation of that connective tissue.  After I delivered, I had so much pain and was given Tylox to help.  It only took the edge off until it healed a little.  But with my second pregnancy, it began separating at around 14 weeks and progressively got worse until I delivered.  Now, it's almost completely pain free.  There's nothing you can do about it, unfortunately!  But from my experience, it never really heals entirely.
  • I have been going to a massage therapist over the last few weeks and my pain went from excruiating to bearable. I have even started cleaning the house again, and my husband can't believe how much more active I have been.

Thank goodness. I didn't know how I was going to make it the last 3 months.

  • I recently tried a thinner pillow between my knees at night than the one I'd been using.  I also have been rolling over very, very slowly and making sure to keep my knees together.  That alone has made things immensely better for me.  It's really only bad for me at night though.

  • Side sleeping is excruciating so I sleep in a recliner position--on my back with pillows under my shoulders so I am semi-sitting and under my knees so they are they bent and together. My Dr said this was the best position. Also, being on all fours feels wonderful. When I get in and out of bed or car I keep my knees together. I sit to change my bottoms and shoes.

For me, too much sitting or lying in the enemy. It seems as though I can have constant dull pain with being up and around or moments of peace but then excruciating pain if I stay down. I try to stand up or take little walks regularly so avoid the excruciating pain.

I got the Prenatal Cradle Plus V2, which is a maternity belly support band plus a pelvic girdle. Overall I think it helps, but sitting with it on can be uncomfortable.

I have early (not quite in 3rd tri yet) SPD, so they are saying mine will only get worse. Crying I'm sorry to hear that others have been in the same early boat.

Does anyone know if squats are ok? I have been terrified of doing them the past 2 weeks, but Bradley Method (which we are using) is a big advocate of their benefit.

  • I had it with my daughter beginning at 18 weeks, it got worse until I delievered. With this pregnancy, it started around 20 weeks and has gotten worse since. The only thing getting me through this is that fact that I know it will get better once this little one is here.
  • Have you tried sitting on a yoga ball to distribute the weight on your hips?
