3rd Trimester

breech baby - ECV (version)?

I am about 35 weeks along and we just found out our baby is breech.  This is my 2nd pregnancy and the doctors said this is very unusual - 1st was normal and I delivered vaginally.  We are trying some of the alternative methods to get the baby to turn (chiropractic, acupuncture, etc.), but the doctor also gave us the option of doing an "external cephalic version" (ECV) around 37 weeks.  My question is, has anyone tried this procedure or knows anyone who has?  Was it successful?  How painful was it?  I've heard everything from "not painful at all" to "very painful."  We are debating; both of my doctors seem to think it is a good option to try, given that it is my 2nd pregnancy, before resorting to a C section if the baby does not turn.

Re: breech baby - ECV (version)?

  • You can have a breech anytime...they aren't genetic.

I've been in the room for a few versions and from the women's reactions, it is more painful than labor.

It depends on what you want: if it's super important to you to have another aginal birth, I would try it.  If it works, awesome, if not, you're still in the same spot.  I've had a c-section before with no complications, so for me, if the baby is still breech at delivery, I'll have a repeat C.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • Last go around my baby didnt turn until 35 weeks. I reviewed the risks and benefits of a version. No way.

  • There's always a chance that LO will turn all by themselves too. I've also heard that many babies flip back into a breech position after a version, so there's nothing that's 100%

  • I'm in the same boat. We are going to wait another week, then book a version if he doesn't turn. My Mom had versions for all 6 of her kids, I guess we were just all stubborn! There are definitely risks and pain involved from what I've read and seen, so I would just suggest doing some research first and make sure it's something you are comfortable with. C-sections also come with their own set of risks, so it's a tough call.

    Good luck!

  • I had one with my first. It wasn't successful, but I remember my OB saying they are less successful with the first baby. That being said, I thought it was very painful. They do them in labor and delivery, put an IV in you and everything so that you're ready should anything happen and they need to do an immediate delivery. Would I do it again if I really wanted a vaginal birth? Probably.

I opted out of the version because of the risks vs. rewards.  I'm having a c-section tomorrow to deliver my breech baby.

  • It's not that unusual to have a breech at your stage--about 5-10% of babies are still breech by term. I've known a few people that had versions and most were successful. As long as it's done with monitoring in the hospital, they're relatively safe and I would absolutely have one done first to see if I could deliver vaginally before committing to a c-section, but that's me.
