3rd Trimester

Super active baby = ....?

I'm getting nervous that this hyper active boy in my ute is going to cause me hyperactivity headaches when he arrives. I'm literally assaulted from the inside, all day, every day. He's strong and it's almost non-stop.

Who else has a super, crazy-active child inside and what do you think it means? 2+ moms, any of your previous offspring as crazy outside as they were in?

Re: Super active baby = ....?

  • Our little dude is VERY active. I was wondering the same thing actually. While I was pregnant with DD she was very calm and she ended up being a really calm baby. Not that any of that helps though haha sorry.

  • I'm right there with you.  I kind of laughed at the kick count thing, this kid doesn't stop moving, he has 10 movements in less than 10 minutes.  He definitely has his 'asleep' periods but they're very regular.  If he's not sleeping he is practicing karate and various other activities in there.

I too, was wondering if a wiggly baby inside means a wiggly baby outside?

  • Add me to the list of those wondering. DS is NUTS in there. All I know is that my dr said it's a good sign, so I put up with it, but I wonder if I'll be tearing my hair out chasing after him when he's out and older.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

...big brother to...???? Due March 2014!

  • The only thing that saves me is that she quiets at night.  Otherwise, she moves so much that I'm usually wiped out!  I've actually taken the dog for a walk to try to get her to calm down a little.  The doctor calls her "fiesty"

  • My older child was extremely active in utero and is still quite the handful! He's tough to keep up with. I swear this one is even more active. I'm in trouble!

    Ruh-roh.... Wink

I wish you luck. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that inutero-activity== ADD or ADHD. I hope to handle a runner ok - but a child who struggles to focus makes me nervous!

  • DS was very active in utero... He had asleep times, but moved and shook and had hiccups all the time! He actually was a verrrrry mellow infant! Just had reflux/milk allergy probs. He definitely needed to be swaddled to control those limbs though!! Now as an almost 21 month old he is very high energy!!! He's very good, but just never stops moving!

  • I don't know if it is a science (active in utero = active outside), but my son and I were both very active in utero and have the same crazy, outgoing, wild personalities.  My MIL said DH barely moved in utero and he is the most relaxed, calm person (even was as a child).  This time I am having twins so it is hard to know which one is moving when, but I think Baby B (my little girl) was really active until recently and Baby A (my little boy) was less active.  Maybe I'll get another wild one like me and a calm one like DH. ;)
  • Soo, an article from Psychology Today by Janet Hopson (v.31 issue 5; 1998 - hopefully this means dated) had this to say about active fetuses:

"In the first formal study of fetal temperament in 1996, DiPietro and her colleagues recorded the heart rate and movements of 31 fetuses six times before birth and compared them to readings taken twice after birth. (They've since extended their study to include 100 more fetuses.) Their findings: fetuses that are very active in the womb tend to be more irritable infants. Those with irregular sleep/wake patterns in the womb sleep more poorly as young infants. And fetuses with high heart rates become unpredictable, inactive babies."

  • That study might hold true for some babies, but my wildly active DS was an awesome baby.  He ate great, was on a 3 hour rotation, never cried (unless he was hungry and was awake for more than a few minutes before I realized it), slept through the night 5 hours at 5 weeks and 12 hours at 3 months (gradually more each week), and has always been great on a schedule.  My DH was the same way.

This gives me hope! I'm going to prepare myself mentally for the worst anyway - that way even if baby is moderately fussy, I'll think he's great! haha!
