Anyone else w/ awful pain in rib area?

Oh man, I knew I shouldn't have posted last week that I had so far avoided painful baby movement. UGH and UGH and dumbo me.

Baby is in position, and her toes are lodged in my ribs.  She isn't really kicking at them, it is more so that they are just hanging out there.  The OB said it is like she is a bird using them as a perch. Right below my bra hem, I just ache.  The only thing that helps is icing the area.  She said the pain will subside once baby drops (which she hasn't at all) and of course, once she is delivered.

Anyone else dealing with this fun?  I tried also getting on all fours in some yoga style poses and that was useless.  Ahhhh... I want my ribs back!!! ;)

  • My LO will move her feet if I lay on my side.  Maybe try that or some other positions.  GL!

  • Same here, and I'm not even that far along. I'm just carrying fairly high, so.. I already know of the rib pains :( It makes sitting very uncomfortable. I can't slouch or lean forward, or that "arch" where my belly and ribs meet is just uncomfortable, and if I lean back, it's also uncomfortable! Ahh!

Laying on my side is cozy.. until my shoulder gets sore.. and that's about it.

  • YES!  It's awful!  I have been dealing with it since about week 20.

In my prenatal yoga class we did an exercise where you lie on your back (don't worry it's only for a short amount of time) and put a squishy ball under you about the height of your bra strap.  You then put your arms on the ground and straight out/perpendicular to your body.  So you look like a cross on the ground.  It lifts your rib cage, opens it up and feels AWESOME.  We would lie there for about 5 minutes and it felt so great.  I have tried to do it at home as well by rollling up a towel instead of the ball.

  • Yes, I have really bad pain in my ribs right below my boobs, but my OB said it isn't baby.  She said (and this made a lot more sense to me) that my rib cage is being stretched away from my body and that the muscles between the ribs are being pulled and getting inflamed, which is causing all of the pain.  She suggested physical therapy if I wanted it (or vicodin!), but I'm just dealing with it.  Icing it does help, as does foregoing a bra.

I've had this pain since week 18 or so and it never gets better!!

  • Yup, I'm right there with you although not as far along.  I'm supremely short waisted so I don't think he has anywhere to go.  His butt and feet are almost always under my right rib cage.  If having his butt there constantly wasn't uncomfortable enough the kicking the same rib over and over again definitely is.

  • LO took over my rib area a long time ago. Usually if I stretch out or lay down, she'll move a little. A lot of times I will literally push my hand in between her feet and my ribs. She tries to fight back sometimes, but will eventually get the hint that her feet are not welcome there!

  • I had serious sleeping issues the other night b/c LO decided my rib cage was a good place to rest his butt--it's like he was putting all 4-5 pounds on it! Definitely NOT comfortable. Luckily he eventually moved on his own but I'm sure I'll be experiencing this more over the next few weeks.

My mom will tell me how it used to tickle when I kicked her in the ribs... I think 31 years has changed her memory a tiny bit, because I can't see how any of this could tickle!!! It hurts!

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!
