  • No food til at least 4 months. You're supposed to give them bm or formula until 1 year at which time you can give them cows milk.

  • Food is for fun before one. We're planning on starting Baby Led Weaning sometime around 6 months, whenever DS shows signs he's ready. TBH if he isn't ready for food till quite a while after 6 months, that's fine. BF is so so easy and convenient and there's very little mess.

  • 6 months as recommended by the APA

  • 4 months is where we'll probably start giving a little bit of food. Still plan on BF for about a year though. .... I think the rule is no cow milk for a year, not solid foods....

The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.
  • Wow, I am definitely the odd one out here. I will introduce rice cereal at 3 months to my LO. If she does well, then we will do jar food soon after, maybe a month or so later. She will continue formula until she is 12 months.

This is what I did with DD1 and this is what I will do this time.

  • I've heard/read to only BF until 6 months, then introduce cereal and work from there.  No cows milk until 1 year.  I think most pedis will say 4-6 months for introducing cereal.  We plan to give only BM until 6 months....but, as with most things, are going play it by ear.  If she shows signs of wanting or needing cereal at 5 months, then we will visit the idea then.

  • We'll start cereal at 4 months and then purees at 6 (assuming the pedi consents to that time frame). Babies shouldn't be on any sort of milk except BM or formula until a year.

  • I was super adamant about breastfeeding exclusively until at least 6 months and maybe 7 or 8, but my daughter has really been showing interest in food lately (she is 5 months old), so we have started letting her taste foods.  Apple, pear, banana and soon rice cereal with breastmilk.  I let her taste one food a day around lunchtime (in addition to breastmilk, never a replacement) but only if she shows interest.  If not, we skip it.  Anyway, my point is that after 4/5 months, if a baby shows all the signs that he/she is ready and wanting to eat, it's okay to let them start tasting.  Every parent should assess their child rather than following an absolute rule.
  • The APA (American Pediatrics Association) recommends just a liquid diet until 6 months so that is when my little guy will start getting cereal.

  • Those of you citing the APA's rec, what do they say is the reasoning behind the 6 month wait? I'm just curious.

Their body is not ready to digest food before that.

Don't know what the APA say but this is what I've learned...

Introducing food before 6 months can increase the risk of allergies. There's a special protective coating inside our intestines which prevents the passage of harmful allergens into the body e.g. soy, wheat, dairy etc. The levels of this IgA is very low in the first months and doesn't reach peak production until around 7 months.

Also, early introduction of solids (before 6 months) also increases the chances of obesity in later life for those babies with risk factors.

  • We'll probably start introducing solids around 6 months (so long as she is interested) but her main source of calories & nutrition will be breast milk until at least 12mo.
