In Canada you are given 1 year of leave after having a baby. That can be used by the mom, the dad, or split between the two. Since I am a SAHW I obviously won't be using that leave so DH is using it. It works out good for him because his employer tops up what unemployment gives (I think it is around 55%) to 97% of his pay (we thought it was 93%, but found out today that it is 97%, yay!).
He works contract work so we thought he could only claim parental leave until the end of his contract (in March) but we found out today that they are extending the parental leave until August! So, we will both be home with LO until he is 9 months old, and still have about the same income. He could stay on parental leave for the full 1 year but his work will only top up until August, so it is back work in August.
DH works out of province so he is only home every 4 days, and has had that schedule for the past 2 years so him being home for an extended period of time is sooooo needed right now. We are so looking forward to this, seriously, I can't wait!!
