Baby Names

I'm having twins. I want to name them Edward and Bella.

TOTALLY kidding. I'm not even pregnant yet. Much less having twins. I'm just making a point. Both Edward and Bella are beautiful names that have been ruined by pop culture.

As I stated in another post Dexter is a family name and I've always considered it for a son. Of course now it makes people think of a serial killer.

What other names do you all love that have been ruined by pop culture?

Re: I'm having twins. I want to name them Edward and Bella.

  • Dexter is top of our list for a boy, and we put off watching the show for-ev-er because if we had a son that we named Dexter we didn't want people to think we'd named our son after the show.  Sadly, we broke down and watched it and fell in love with the show, but we're debating if we want to give the name up.  We just can't part with it yet.

Additionally, Bella was one of our #1 names and when I started reading Twilight 2 years ago, on page 1 or 2 when I saw her name was Bella I pretty much threw the book down and said "well, F***, there goes one of our names!"

  • My DH and I have actually stolen a lot of our favorite names from T.V. shows or movies that we love:

     Vincent (Entourage)

    Desmond (Lost)

    Dexter (Dexter)

    Elliot (E.T.)

    Ilsa (Casablanca)

Elodie (The United States of Tara)

We're just dorky that way. I have no problem with the name "Dexter" being associated to that particular character.  I figure people will forget about it in a few years anyway and its not that big a deal.

Edward and Bella on the other hand....I have two close friends who LOVE the name Bella and it has totally been ruined for them. I like Rosalie, but wouldn't use it now because of Twilight...so I guess for me, it depends not on how immoral a character may be (like Dexter) but rather how irritated I am by them (any name from Twilight)

  • If I had twins I would name them Hanna and Kevin...

    Anyone else?

  • I have loved the name Isabella for as long as I an remember. I really don't care about pop culture. Shortly after the last movie is released, the characters will be long forgotten.

  • Scarlett. I love it for it's connection to Gone with the Wind, but it's rising in popularity today and most people are not choosing it for it's history--they're choosing it because of the prominence of Scarlett Johannson and some other celebrity (can't remember who . . . ?), who named her daughter Scarlett. It's absolutely infuriating.

    Bella/Isabella ruined by Twilight.

Hermione ruined by Harry Potter. This one really, really hurts me. Scarlett was at least well-known before it became celebrity, but Hermione was an old, secret little gem I've loved for years and years and now, if I used it, everyone would assume I discovered it in the pages of Harry Potter.

  • I love the show Charmed, and our dog is Piper- when we found out we were having twins, I tried to convince my DW that we should name them Phoebe and Paige.

  • Isabelle/Isabella is the main one that's been ruined for me.

I like Dexter, but I've never seen the show.

  • I think I'm a lot more likely to be offset by a celebrity name. Like I probably wouldn't ever use Angelina, Isla, Evangeline or Scarlett because they all bring to mind a single celebrity. And I think all of these names are just lovely, so that's kind of a bummer.

Even though the books are where people will associate the name from, I don't think it's a name that's "caught on" in the US, so I would still go for it.  And, FWIW, the first name of the woman who voiced Madame in The Aristocats was Hermione. Smile

I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • Penelope was almost ruined for me by the movie of the same name. But it gave me the push to talk to my guy about the name, and I'm so glad I did. It seems that it's not on the radar of teen namers in the same way that Bella and Edward are, and since it was only one movie, I don't think I have too much to worry about.

That said, I'm about to go ape s**t on the show, Teen Mom because my beloved, love-this name is being taken down in the mud...by MUD. I can't post about Amber without several posters pointing out the b.tchy lady on that show.

    Ilsa (Casablanca)

Love, love Ilsa because of Casablanca, but its hard to pull off. Its beautiful though.

We also actually started to like Olivia because of the character on Fringe. Then, we realized how popular it was and changed course. However, I still love the name.

  • Alejandro. It was my #1 boy name for years. I guess it's ok b/c my mom couldn't pronounce it anyway.

  • I hear ya! When my father died when I was 13, I decided I would name my first born son Edward in his honor...but I just can't do it anymore! As much as I love and miss my father, I couldn't do that to a poor child, it's just not fair!

You should still use Edward!  Your child's peers will not know anything about Twilight, and the family significance WAY cancels out those stupid books and movies.  My late father was also Edward and we will definitely be using it as a middle name (if we have a boy).  Screw Twilight.

Don't count on it... Alvin and the Chipmunks have been around for over 50 years.

But this is an association that would be positive for me. It's a family show at least. I love Simon, Theodore, Bridget and Eleanore. Jeanette is a family name, but I don't like it much (probably because it's in the wrong generation for the hundred year rule comeback.. so my daughter might think it's awesome).

Did you notice in the Squeakquel, that Jeanette said "Sometimes I feel more like an 'Olivia'." My guess is because the name Jeanette is so out of vogue right now, and the writers wanted the millions of little Olivias out there to feel a connection to the movie.

This post reeks of Bristol and Levi...

    I'm confused.

Could someone PM me and let me know what makes you think this girl is Hanna (other than the join date)? I'd especially like to know what you found in her introduction post, because I combed over that post very carefully before I responded, and found nothing. Thanks in advance!

  • I really wouldn't let pop culture ruin a name for me, if I loved it enough. (But then, I guess, the only "Twilight" name I like is Rosalie, and DH shot it right down...).

There are names I would be neutral on (Reagan and Damien; Clarice and Eli) if it wasn't for pop culture. But I only really let bad history ruin a name I like for me. For instance. If it wasn't for Hitler, I'd love Adolf. I think it's a strong, German name and I like that. But it's a no go. I also like Fidel, but...well, thanks a lot, Castro.

DH and I were actually just talking about Nikolai, which we both really like. My fundamental extended family would think that's AWFUL because it's the name of the Antichrist in the "Left Behind" series. But we like that name and a bestselling series is not going to be a consideration.

My nephew is Theodore!  I love my little Theo!  And although people think of the chipmunks, it is not something that they bring up constantly...because my nephew is just so stinkin' cute!

I've loved it from when I was a child and watched Road to Avonlea.  Then that stupid show made it waaaay popular.

  • DH and I love the name Harrison. Unfortunately our last name is the same as the famous one. We just can't use it.

We also really like Edward. But we'd use it anyway, because at least it's a classic name. And I want the nickname Ned, after my great-grandfather (who went by that -- his initials.)

We were REALLY annoyed when Angelina Jolie named one of her twins Vivienne... we'd had Vivian picked out for years! We actually waited until the SSA list came out to look at how much it had gone up before we decided we'd use it anyway.
