I am not getting one and neither is my H. The last time that I had the flu was the one time that I got the flu shot, about 6 or 7 years ago. The flu shot did not cause the flu, but it was not for the same strain that I picked up. My thought is that everyone has to make the decision that is right for them, and to each their own.
I'm in the "but I never get the flu" camp - so if it were any other year, I wouldn't be getting one.
I'll be getting mine on Monday from my OB and my husband will get his (as well as TDAP) as soon as our Primary starts taking appointments for it.
IMO, it's one thing to be cocky when it comes to my own health - but I'm not interested in endangering my baby's health/life. My doctor says I should get it, and I trust him.

I got it when i was pregnant with DS, i got it last winter, so did DS and DH and the three of us again will be getting it. We have never had any adverse reactions and weve never gotten the flu. Hope this year is the same!
I got mine yesterday. If I wasn't pregnant, there is no way I would be getting one, but I feel like my OB has my best interest at heart, so I went with his recommendation. I am still on the fence about giving the flu shot to DD, but I am leaning towards yes, since she is in preschool this year.

i don't know about every other state but here in OK they are mixing it with the H1N1 vacine this year and in my opinion they haven't done enough research on that one. they just threw it together and threw it out there. there was something on our news the other day about several people having reactions this year. it is a really hard decision because i don't want to put my baby at risk but obviously there is risks to getting it also. ask your OB if they themselves are getting it that should give a good idea about what they really think about it cause i know a lot of doc's that are encouraging their pt's to get the vac but they themselves won't get it. hmmmm?
If you're concerned about a reaction, get a preservative-free shot - it's the preservative that people usually react to. I got mine, because my OB recommended it, and because I teach high school AP classes & last year I had students come to class with H1N1 because they didn't want to fall behind. IMO, even though I never get flu shots, getting the flu isn't a risk I'm willing to take this year, both because I want to keep LO healthy, and because I need all my sick days for when LO is born.
DH will get his flu shot sometime in the near future as well, since I don't want him bringing the flu home to LO after LO is born.

Got mine about an hour and a half ago. First time I've ever gotten one.
I'm in the camp of "never get the flu so what's the point in getting the shot" normally, but because our immune systems are compromised during pregnancy and I heard about all those pregnant women dying of H1N1 last year, I made sure to get it now that I'm pregnant. I did make sure that I got the dead, preservative-free shot, though.

Flu shots are not manufactured state-by-state. Everyone in the U.S. gets the same seasonal flu shot, so it's no different for you in OK than it is for anyone else here.
And they are not "mixing" the flu shot with the H1N1 vaccine. This is nonsense. I'll just repost what I said about this the other day:
Every year the most prevalent influenza strains (usually 3) are predicted and included in the regular shot.
Last
year the seasonal flu shot would have included the 2009 H1N1 strain if
it had emerged as such a threat just a tad earlier in the season. Since
it did not, and it was predicted to be such a worldwide threat, a
separate flu shot with just the H1N1 strain was made available.
Hysteria ensued among people who clearly did not understand
that it was JUST ANOTHER FLU SHOT.
This year, 2009 H1N1 is
included as one of the three strains in the regular seasonal flu shot,
because it is still predicted to be prevalent. There is nothing scary,
deadly or otherwise objectionable about this strain being included in
the shot. To be OK with a seasonal flu shot and then balk because H1N1
is one of the strains is nonsensical.
Both of us got ours today at my 20 week appointment. I get one every year because I have asthma and work with kids so I was always going to get it. DH is not a flu shot fan and has never had one before but he got it because the OB told him that baby will be born during flu season and the only way to protect her is for everyone around her to have immunity. If an adult wants to take the risk of getting the flu then I am all for them not getting the shot but babies die from the flu. It's not worth that risk to me.
Our OB recommends it too, but they arent pushy. I don't believe in vaccines (for myself or my baby) and I have luckily never had a cold/flu/sinus infection that a little sleep didnt cure (when i've been sick at all - very very rarely). My husband used to get the flu shot and it used to give him the flu so it was pointless...he hasn't had it in a few years and what do ya know, he hasn't had the flu in a few years either. lol
Ultimately its a personal decision, but don't let anyone tell you that you HAVE to have it.
DH and I live in Asia and since SARS it's fair to say that nearly everyone here (pregnant or otherwise) gets the flu shot as standard operating procedure. Hong Kong takes the threat of a flu pandemic pretty seriously and so do I. (That said, if I were back home in cozy New England I imagine I might feel sort of 50/50 about doing it.)

Thanks for posting this. I actually just started thinking about this over the past couple of days, and the more I research, the more undecided I am!!!
All I can say is, don't let your doctor tell you what to do. Take their opinion as an opinion. DO YOUR RESEARCH and use your own judgement and mommy instinct. There are risks and benefits with whatever you will choose.
or we could just invest in big bubbles to live in... then we wouldn't have to decide
