3rd Trimester

fetal fibronectin test...

Who here has had it done?  My doc swabbed me today-as I was showing some signs of pre-term labor-sudden onset back pain, pelvic pressure-contractions (inconsitant though).  I feel like this test is kinda worthless.  I mean-what if it's positive...I MAY go into labor in the next few weeks...if it's neg..the doc said is doesn't nec. mean I'm not at risk for PTL...now I will just be worried from now on... I live in Western NY and I'm supposed to fly to Chicago to be in my BFs wedding this weekend...oye...

Re: fetal fibronectin test...

  • If it's negative it usually means you won't go into labor in the next 2 weeks.  If it is positive, it doesn't necessarily mean you will but the doctor can do stuff (steroid shots, drugs to prevent PTL) for you.

  • I had it done multiple times.  I'm guessing if it is positive your doc won't want you to head to Chicago, just because of the chance.  Mine was always negative, but I still had lots of trips to L&D for PTL.  Negative gives you a less than 1% chance to deliver in the next two weeks, which I did find reassuring, but that's just me.  GL

  • I feel like its kind of a worthless test. I have had it done 3 times this pregnancy, mainly b/c I've been having contractions which they have been stopping with shots and oral meds such as terabutaline and procardia. Each time it came back negative. More than likely if it does come back negative you have a lesser chance of going into labor within the next 2 weeks.
